kullik357
Hello forum goers.I have been quite enjoying this game so far, although i sadly still find magic to be rather weak. And so, i've been wanting to re-roll, and about that i have a few questions. I really like the idea of a sneak system and i'm just wondering, does a rogue type actually work in this game? I figure it must because it's in the game but it's a bit dodgy imo since most enemies seem to instantly know where you are, at least in the quests. Also, is stealth in this like it is in other games where you have to take a character who specialises in single target damage, meaning that after you kill one guy you need to run away and hide waiting for the alert to go down before you kill someone else, thus meaning it takes half an hour to clean a room that a sword and board type could run into and annihilate in seconds. If this is a viable class, what race and class should i have to make it work best? Oh and what are Argonians supposed to be good at, i mean they are immune to poison, resistant to disease and can breath underwater but what skills do the excel at? The character creation doesn't really tell me. Thanks in advance :) Edited January 10, 2011 by kullik357
majikmonkee
Hey there, glad you're enjoying the game. The main thing that class determines is just your base starting skills. For example, thieves will excel at stealth more than mage or warrior type classes, however, the beauty of Oblivion is unlike some other games that determine which of your skills level as you go, you actually have the freedom to level whatever you want. You can have a stealth character who is also a strong melee fighter, you would just need to make sure you have at least one combat skill set as a major skill (I believe the thief class does have blade already) and make sure to level that combat skill by using it a lot in "controlled conditions". Even my more combat heavy characters do a lot of sneaking in dungeons, so they build up sneak very quickly, and can use it as a way to lead off the melee assaults. Your skills are really only limited by what you choose to level or not level, if that makes sense. Here's the breakdown on Argonians... AttributesMale +10 Agility and Speed -10 Willpower, Endurance, and Personality Female +10 Intelligence -10 Endurance and Personality Skills+10 Athletics and Security +5 Alchemy, Blade, Hand to Hand, Illusion, and Mysticism Males tend to excel at "scout type" classes, they are skilled acrobats and have natural security boost, but they suffer when it comes to being natural warriors. Females are well suited to start mage type classes, but again, are not great when it comes to being warriors. Again, you can use any number of methods to compensate for these weaknesses...you definitely start out with some advantages and disadvantages, but either through enchantments or dedicated training (or birthsign bonuses help sometimes too) you can make just about any race effective at any class. InAComaDial999
Absolutely, stealth characters are viable and a lot of fun to play. Building a good class is key, though, and the stock classes really don't work very well due to leveling issues. Here's the build I used for my most recent stealth character: Specialization: StealthAttributes: Agility, LuckSkills:AlchemyBladeBlockLight ArmorMarksmanSecuritySpeechcraftTake the Thief birthsign and go with a sneaky race like a Dark Elf or a Wood Elf and you're all set. Yes, it's a stealth-based character, but it doesn't have the Sneak skill. The reason for this is that you'll be using Sneak all the time, and if it is one of your major skills you'll level up way too fast. However, since this is a Stealth specialized class and Agility is one of its two attributes, your Sneak will go up quickly. I really liked this build. I was able to level with two +4 or +5 at every level up, and raised my Luck each time as well. By the time I was around 10th level I was incredibly deadly at sneak attacks. I couldn't go toe to toe with strong opponents with a sword, but I could finish someone off if I got the drop on them with the bow first.
