How to Design a New Weapon/Armor

Well theres 2 ways to change the look of armor/weapons,

Method 1 : use 3DS Max to make a new 3D mesh then export the mesh into morrowind. This method is the most expensive as 3DS Max costs around $3000 to buy...also it takes a fair amount of time to learn how to use it.

Method 2 : Get a reskining program and change the way the textures look. This basicly replaces a texture (textures are the images wraped over 3d meshes) and is easy to do...just about any decent paint editing program can edit textures...and often you can make a mesh look competely different by this simple technique... of all the skining programs i have used i quite like NifText as i find it simple to use and very effective (it even provides a handy texture preview funtion) You can get NifText here !

Well, not quite correct... you can get a student version (same exact program, just can't sell your work) for around $700. Or of course, you could always make it with one of the free/cheap programs (blender, gmax, wings3d, etc) and give it to someone like me who does have 3dsmax for the final export/conversion. If your program can save in a common file format, it should be pretty easy to convert it.

The only problem with reskinning is that you're limited to the shape of the original model. Sure, you can do a lot with it, but all the reskinning in the world isn't going to make that shoulder piece curved instead of square. And for weapons, a reskin is almost impossible. Stuff like blade shape/length/etc can only be done with a new model.

I guess i forgot to mention G-max and other 3D editing programs...

And as for the reskinning armor thing...you may not be able to turn a square into a curve...but you can take a curved armor mesh and texture it to match the rest of the armor.....

And for weapons...it is easy to reskin weapons, i've made tons of reskined weapons....but to change the shape / length you are right about the new mesh thing !
