Something using OBSE is causing problems...

Yes, I've done it again.

Just started a brand new game and within an hour I already have issues. I started in Anvil, joined the Fighter's Guild, went to do the first quest with Arvena Thelas and her rats. Problem: I can't get into her house. Whenever I try to go through the door, the loading screen pops up as usual, but when it ends, the game just freezes and goes black. No other buildings in Anvil have this issue, only Arvena's house. I tried using coc via the console and it does the same thing: I get a loading screen, then it fades to black and the game hangs indefinitely.

The odd thing here is that I know it's being caused by a mod that requires OBSE to run. Reason I know is because I accidentally started up the game from within Wrye Bash, once -- I thought Wb automatically used OBSE loader the way OBMM does, but apparently not, because the game loaded without OBSE and I got a few COBL error messages to that effect. I was about to quit out of the game and re-start using OBSE but since I was standing right in front of the door I decided to try one last time and go into Arvena's house. Guess what? I made it in with no problems.

I went back outside and inside again a few times to make sure I wasn't dreaming. Then saved, quit the game and re-started using OBSE again. Same problem; once again I got the game freeze when trying to enter that house.

What the hell is going on here? Does anyone know of a mod that might be causing this, one that apparently only fires itself up when OBSE is present?

Edit: Whatever it is, it apparently really really does not want me to do the rat quest. I tried starting the game without OBSE, going into Arvena's house and talking to her, then killing the lion in the basement, exiting her house, and saving my game. When I restart the game with OBSE as normal and try to load that save, the game loads up fine and works for about 5 - 10 seconds before suddenly freezing up completely and hanging with the music still playing but the controls unresponsive. I have to ctrl-alt-del to get out of it.

Saves from before I went into the house have no problems, OBSE or no OBSE, either way. If I start the game with no OBSE, save without going into the house, then re-load with OBSE, it works fine. I only get the freeze and crash if I try to load a save where I've been into the house and back out again. WTF?

Edit the Second: I have a free day, so what the hell. I'm slowly going through my mod list and completely uninstalling mods that require OBSE, one at a time, then testing to see if I can get into the house. It's a slow process because it takes 12 minutes to rebuild my bashed patch after each uninstall, plus these mods are complicated by nature and some of them require a lot more effort than just unchecking the box in order to totally uninstall it without leaving remnants. Ah well.

So far I can confirm that it is NOT All Natural, Storms & Sound, or RefScope. I'll continue updating my post as I eliminate possible culprits. Maybe sometime next week I'll have narrowed it down to one!

Rather than going through all of your mods first, you should remove all OBSE plugins first, in case it's one of those -- and there are nowhere near as many.

OBSE plugins... huh, didn't think of that. Thankfully I only have four of those, the two that are required for Better Music System, plus Fast Exit2 and OSR. I'll go try removing them and see if it helps. Thanks.

These are the mods that I do not run and I do not have your problem with the rat lady's house.

Personally, I would start my testing by removing "B9 xulCliffsOfAnvil.esp". I did try out the mod but removed it because of bugs and what appeared to be dirty edits.

Unique Landscapes aren't OBSE-dependent, though. I do appreciate the help.

It turned out that the problem is COBL. Specifically, it's something to do with COBL main and not one of the optional plugins. I'm not sure what the hell, but given that thousands of other COBL users don't have this problem, I'm going to just re-download a fresh copy of the mod and totally reinstall from scratch, and hopefully that'll do it.

Cobl is not OBSE dependent either.

Not entirely, but some of its functions definitely do depend on OBSE. The only reason I first realized that I'd accidentally started up the game without OBSE was because immediately upon load, a bunch of COBL error messages popped up to inform me that this and that and the other thing were now disabled due to lack of OBSE.

I'm not sure what was causing the original problem, but I figured it had to be some kind of weird fluke since I know nobody else using COBL has encountered this issue. When you run 300+ mods in a single game, you start getting used to weird flukes from time to time, heh.

Whatever it was, I managed to get rid of it by doing a total uninstall of everything COBL-related and COBL-dependent, a clean save, and a reinstall of the mods. I didn't add or remove any mods at all -- just the squeaky clean reinstall -- and now I can get right into Arvena's house without problem. Go figure.
