Runtime Error While Starting Oblivion

Well, I didn't play Oblivion for a bit then decided to go back to it. When I did, my ongoing game wouldn't start. I was attempting to start it using the OBSE shorcut and it told me I was using an older version of Oblivion. After having to scrap the game and reinstalling it, I got a message:

Microsoft Visual Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Bethesda\Oblivion\Oblivion.exe

R6002

-floating point not loaded

I know this isn't an issue with Oblivion, but i've done some research and found other people have had similar problems with Oblivion as well as other games. This didn't happen the last time I played the game, obviously. I found that I could disable any non-Microsoft programs for a clean boot and try again, but this didn't work. I tried uninstalling Microsoft Visual C ++ 2005 and 2008 and reinstalling both, including the ATL updates for both. No luck. I also read that changing the level to Administrator would work and tried this. Still no luck. Another forum mentioned changing the Compatibility menu, but i'm not exactly sure which one to choose (i'm using Windows 7 Home Premium and I don't see an option for this one unless it's under a different name). I ran Spybot (in normal mode and safe mode) and removed a few things and restarted, hoping that would fix the problem. Again, nothing changed. I don't have any sort of virus blocker software installed at the moment. I was hoping someone out there was in my situation and found a solution, because I have yet to find one. Anyone out there who can help?

Edit: I also have Morrowind installed on this computer, and it works fine, if that matters.

That error could very well mean you are trying to install the game from your local hard drive, and not the original CD.

I don't understand. I've always used the same discs to install. How would i check on that and fix it if that's the case?

Edit: I should also add that when I try clicking on the OBSE shortcut (or even from the Oblivion folder), it tells me I don't have the correct version installed.

Well you should know if you are installing from disk or hard drive. Regarding the wrong version, are you talking about trying to patch it? You need to be clearer.

Ok. I'm installing this game the say way i've always installed games. I have it so the menus don't aotomatically pop up when i insert a cd, but I go into My Computer and click on the cd icon to start the setup. I was playing Oblivion a few weeks ago, and when I went back to it, this problem was there. I uninstalled Microsoft Visual C ++ 2005 and 2008 from my computer. I'm not sure if it was neccessary to have both versions on my computer, but they were there, and now they're uninstalled. I installed Microsoft Visual C ++ 2010. When i try to start OBSE , this error comes up as shown in the obse_loader.log:

crc = 14F715A9

You have an unknown version of Oblivion. Please check http://obse.silverlock.org to make sure you're using the latest version of OBSE, then send an email to the contact addresses listed in obse_readme.txt if this version is not supported in the latest release. (CRC = 14F715A9)

checksum not found

I've patched Oblivion to v1.2.0416. I have the GOTY version, and i'm also using the official Shivering Isles patch from the Elder Scrolls site (not sure exactly what version, but I assume it's current). I'm also using the Unofficial Oblivion patch v3.2.0, the Unofficial Shivering Isles patch v1.4.0 and the Unofficial Official Mods patch (15th Release). I have a copy of Oblivion installed with these patches for a backup as well as a copy I was going to use as my game copy, complete with mods, Wrye Bash, BOSS, and other stuff added. I tried going directly to the Oblivion.exe from the basic backup copy as well and got the same error. I ran Spybot a few times as well as CCleaner and i'm currently installing Ad-Aware. I'm not sure what other information I should post, but i'm still confused.

Well, something is amiss with your version of Oblivion, as your are getting an error when running oblivion.exe and OBSE is telling you that the CRC is unknown. So, do you have a cracked or NO-CD version? Do you have Direct2Drive version, as D2D does not work with OBSE? Is your disk the original disk or a copy/image?

Not exactly sure how to tell which version I have, but it's the Game Of The Year edition, the same one i've always had. It says 'PC DVD' on the box, if that means anything. I know the cd isn't damaged. Any way to find out which version I have for sure?

Edit: Well I installed Ad-Aware, and whenever I try clickin on the same .exe files, a box pops up saying its a Win32.Palite.b virus, so I think after running Ad-Aware the problem might be solved. Hopefully.

If your system is infected, AdAware is not good enough for a thorough cleaning. Please, for you own peace of mind, download the free trial of Kaspersky, which will clean your system better than AdAware ever could.

I'll definitely do that, since Ad-Aware obviously didn't do much to clean the virus. I'll report back. Thanks for the help.

Edit: Well I ran Kapersky once and it didn't seem to have cleared up the problem. I'm still getting those errors. Maybe if I run it again in safe mode it will work.

Edit: Ran Kapersky in safe mode. Reinstalled Oblivion. Problem fixed. Thanks, Hickory.
