I'm having an issue with .dds files and NifSkope

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I'm trying to apply a texture to a mesh. I've edited the .dds file in GIMP, and I'm trying to apply it to an existing mesh in NifSkope.

Here is what I encounter:

I have taken headwrap3.dds, done NOTHING to it, applied it to the mesh in NifSkope, and it works, perfectly.

I have taken headwrap3.dds, drawn a bunch of pencil marks all over it in GIMP, overwritten the original headwrap3.dds, applied it to the mesh in NifSkope, and it shows up, with the pencil marks, perfectly.

I have taken headwrap3.dds, added a new layer to it in GIMP, overwritten the original headwrap3.dds, applied it to the mesh in NifSkope, and it (with the new layer) will not show up on the mesh. The mesh remains totally white.

I have taken headwrap3.dds, added an image that overlaps the entire texture BUT is still in the same layer, overwriten the original headwrap3.dds, applied it to the mesh in NifSkope, and it will not show up on the mesh. the mesh remains totally white.

With that last one, what am I doing incorrectly? I'm trying to retexture this head wrap, and I cannot get the new texture to show up in NifSkope (when I retexture it with an image). Thanks!

Depending on the "layer" you added to the texture set, you may need to make adjustments to the .nif. Screenshots of the nif properties, the texture in gimp (layers that were added) and explanation of what you intend with the texture change would be supportive to anyone wishing to help with your issue.

Thanks for your reply. When you say, ".nif properties," what do you mean? Where can I find the .nif properties?

I would like to take a .jpg of grey fabric and put it completely over headwrap3.dds. I have done this, and I export it, in the correct settings, as a .dds file. When I go to apply it to the mesh, the mesh remains unaffected.

When I don't place the .jpg over headwrap3.dds, NifSkope renders headwrap3.dds, perfectly.

I think that this points toward you being correct. It may be about the layers.

When saving any texture intended to be a .dds format you have to be sure to save in the correct format. Not sure how GIMP saves but .dds textures can be DXT [1-5] format. The differences denote how any alpha channel info is saved into the texture. Perhaps you're not taking this into account; the alpha channel info, that is. Check the original texture to see what's in the alpha channel and then save in the correct format to preserve it or, if need be, edit that info to match your other changes.

To learn more, google dxt formats and alpha channel... Hope this helps!
