i have not ever played Oblivion, nor will i ever play it because i can not stand how cheesy the melee looks. i hated it in Fallout 3 but luckily i could use guns, but there was no way in hell i was gunna play a game as long as Fallout using just melee, it looks like crap. but its Elder Scrolls and ive heard a lot of good things about it, so with Skyrim im hoping to finally get my chance to play it

does anyone know yet if the melee will look the same or not? if it looks the same then unfortunately i wont be buying Skyrim, but if it actually looks real, then hooray for me. idk if this info is out yet as i dont think there are any gameplay videos out, but ya if anyone would know it would be someone on here.

There's another topic we've got going just a few posts down about unarmed. I don't think they've said anything about it. So far, we're speculating on how they should do hand-to-hand and if they should have it.

i dont get it, you hated the way it looks when you swinged a weapon in oblivion so you assumed it sucked?

i never said i thought Oblivion sucked. on the contrary, i said ive heard many good things about Oblivion/Elder Scrolls and i was very interested in it, but i just cant stand how swinging a weapon looks, so i skipped it. which is why i asked about Skyrim, and if the style was going to be better.

You have the option to play in third person, which I personally prefer for combat. If they don't include a target locking system it's usually one of the first mods to be released (and way too overlooked).

From the information I've gathered it seems Skyrim will be advancing combat to a degree... Not quite as far as I'd hoped--a simple combo system would be awesome--but... that's just how it is.

combo systems blow for everything but fighting games. rather have something like assassins creed 2 just hit X everytime the blades hit each other and when done right you kill your enemy in a cool way. combo systems suck AC 2 does it right.

Have you played action games like the ninja gaiden or god of war series? Both feature good combo systems: diversity and depth without the excessive requirements of a strictly fighting game. This is by necessity, since the vast bulk of each game is combat. Those are the types of systems I would advocate -- with the caveat that each move and style be better balanced among the others. I haven't tried AC2 but I know AC1 combat was lacking for me. The prince of persia series also featured decent-ish combat (not exceptional), though platforming was its main draw. Come to think of it, Skyrim could benefit from a better platforming system too...

AC 1 was crap AC 2 was awesome it really is a BIG improvement. ninja gaiden and god of war series are not rpgs and it wouldnt work well, id hate it for skyrim had combos using more then 3 keys. combat would be annoying even more so on a keyboard. ive passed both ninja gaidens and i still say combo systems suck but this prply comes from my hatred of fighting games........ god how i hate fighting games.

Both games feature two button combo systems (x+y) modified by directional movement. They're nothing close to mortal kombat or street fighter etc. I agree I wouldn't want to see combo systems from fighting games, since they wouldn't work in a 3d environment against multiple enemies. Action games, however, excel in this aspect.

Just because a game isn't an rpg doesn't mean its features wouldn't translate well. The thief series stealth system would translate extremely well to the Elder Scrolls. Platforming moves such as wall running, climbing, hanging, and pole swinging would also be great additions. A system like the hookshot from zelda would be great too (as a grappling hook); or block pushing. If bethesda were to add racing elements, I would expect them to take features from racing games that enhanced the experience as well.

At any rate it doesn't matter what either of us think. Bethesda has already implemented their system, and there's nothing we can do to change it...
