I have three favourites:

Necropolis

Fits for Necromancer and mages in general. It looks so GREAT inside... Giant libraly, huge statues, that necro-tower it tne mountains. That place's long story.

You have to see it yourself.

You need to rebuild it using undead first (in fact' you're giving some gold to Lich who you have to resurrect in the beginning).

It is available to rebuild bridge and all other rooms in separate.

Dwemer Skyship

Really awesome mod, I like it's steampunk atmosphere and Dwemer Parachute. You feel absolutely safe up there.

And if skyship is high in the sky, you can fly long distances with the parachute.

And I the one made for myself -- Farragut renewed.

I beleive it's very atmospheric, too. Some old contracts of Lucien Lachance inside :D

I am addicted to houses. I love the fancy mansions and the beautiful farms like Shadowcrest. But here's the funny thing, the house I use most has no alchemy sets, no sorters, no luggage. It doesn't have 20 nicely labelled no respawn chests. The only deluxe feature it has is a stash of wine and ale, which is very useful if you have a thirst mod. The simplicity of the home makes it well suited to either male or female characters, and various races. It's a tiny but warm little shack with a burst of cheerful morning glories growing over the porch. It has a roaring fireplace, a crude table, a couple reasonable starter weapons, and space and beds for a couple friends. There is no big garden. There is no quest. Normally I would miss those things. I don't know why I love this house so much, but maybe it's because I don't like starting a character off too rich unless that is important to the backstory. I don't like starting one off homeless unless that is part of the backstory. This little house can be a thief hideout, or a free waystation provided by the temple for travellers and pilgrims. It can be the home of a wine trader. Maybe it belongs to the disowned child of a noble, or a young mercenary just starting out. There is room to make it serve many backstories. It has everything a new PC needs to get started...and not much else. I've seen other starter houses but the location of this one is really ideal. Very few people have downloaded this cozy little shack. If you're looking for something different, ignore the silly title, and give it a try. I'm so glad I did. No, I don't know the modder who made it. It's just an unusually convincing starter home. It is easy to come up with a reason your character might have been arrested in this area, whether rightly or wrongly.

I suppose you could check Oblivion's Real Estate site for a careful selection of different styled houses.

Among mine favourites are Frostcrag Reborn (quite functional and not overly cluttered), most of Korana's work (many small cool functionalities, and great looks), Bravil Sea Domes (a cool underwater house). As for portable houses (they are a bit of cheating, I know), I absolutely adore a cute simple The Box (avalible here on tesnexus) and The Spire of Apparitions by Lemunde. The first one is a just small, handy house with a lot of funny references that appears as a big portable box, the second one is a different dimension spooky tower.

There are many great castle, tower, etc mods, but when a house is too big, I just download it, walk around, think "it's pretty", but then never actually use it - it's not very convinient to run around all the time. After trying dozens of really cool moded houses I live in an only slightly modded Waterfront Shack, and it's all right with me

Now that's a loaded topic. Why not just ask something that will guaranty a flame war like "Whats the top ten best video games of all time" or "The best pizza toppings".

The thing is every one is going to have something they prefer for a home. Weather its a wonderful view of the Imperial capital or beach front property on anvils bay. A Grand ballroom, fully stocked kitchen, a war room with every weapon and armor set in game or a dungeon with lots of people to punish, All will add up to the individual players gaming style and how they want it to look.

Really I have seen one great suggestion here that I will repeat, that was Don Zardeone who said "The one you build yourself".
