FPS decrease over time?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently running FNV with an Intel i5 and a GTX 780 with ~50 mods and NO ENB - but somehow, that doesn't seem to be even relevant here. There's no reason why I should be having FPS troubles, but for some reason I am currently only getting 24 FPS in the front entrance to Camp McCarran and AT BEST am getting 35-40 FPS.

Here's the thing, though: After checking to see if the .dll fix might help me and finding that it wasn't doing anything no matter how I had it installed, I tried loading up an old save. My fears were confirmed when I saw that I wasn't going crazy and in fact I had been right in thinking that my FPS seemed to have been getting progressively worse while playing with a character over a mere three days or so. Loading up the old save, I was easily getting 60 FPS while playing around in the sky with collision turned off, and at Camp McCarran I was getting 45 FPS.

So then, what could POSSIBLY be the cause of this? I've never heard of something like this happening short of save bloat, but my save is currently at 5MB, which I don't think is abnormal at all (unless maybe it is for FNV but not in Skyrim?). So if it's not save bloat, why in the hell in my FPS experiencing such a severe drop like this?

Here is my load order for reference:

Find a safe interior cell, the Goodsprings pub is good, wait 4 in game days, save, restart the game and load that save, that should reset a lot of the world and maybe clear up what's been causing you problems. Doing this every now and again is a good habit to get into, I started a while back and now I have perfectly functioning 500+ hour saves.

Well, thanks for the suggestions, but I tried both of these things and have seen maybe a slight increase in FPS, but nothing substantial and my performance is still far worse than it should be. Got rid of FCO - The Glowing One, and waited four days in the Goodsprings saloon, saved the game there, and then restarted it. It didn't appear to change anything. I'm getting around 30 FPS inside the Goodsprings saloon, which is absolutely ridiculous.

I also previously tried setting the graphical settings in the launcher to low, and that also only gave me a marginal increase in performance. With that and with having tested my earlier saves to confirm that my performance is getting worse, I'm completely stumped.

EDIT: Just tried verifying the cache and editing Stutter Remover's .ini FPS management settings, and neither of these changed anything either. I also checked to make sure that FPS clamp isn't on, and turned off VSYNC. I still cannot get higher than 30 FPS in game unless I go to the pause menu, and even then I'm only at 35 FPS.

Also tried adding

bUseThreadedAI=1
iNumHWThreads=2

to Fallout.ini and tried removing the d3d9.dll fix to see if either of these would change anything, and *gasp* everything is still exactly the same ;_;

Pardon my language, but HOLY s*** I ACTUALLY FIGURED OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS!!1!

If anyone else encounters the same problem as myself, try this fix:

For all you Project Reality users out there: It turns out that this mod was the culprit behind a loss of at least thirty frames-per-second's worth of performance - and the fix for it is stupidly easy. Just go into the MCM, enable all its features, exit the menu, then go back and disable everything. Bam, sixty FPS no sweat.

I have no idea what in the mod causes this to happen, but this appears to have completely fixed the problem. I have yet to see whether or not the FPS drop will come back since I've only just done this and exited the game after having enabled a couple features again that I liked, so I'll come back after further testing with my results.

EDIT: Just coming back to say that I have not experienced any further performance problems. It looks like that did the trick.

I hate to drudge up and old post but HOLY S*** you are a saint! I've troubleshot this problem on my save for HOURS (ini settings, disabling mods, disabling ENB). Doing exactly what you suggested fixed my problem INSTANTLY! Thank you!

Yes, it is insanely tricky to get "right". Which is why we have the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" article to track the many problems and solutions in one place. This and a number of other performance solutions are found there, as well as many other common issues.

I recommend anyone also read the entire "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article to understand the differences between this game and others you may have experience with; especially if this is your first attempt to mod FNV or it's been more than a year since you last did so. Besides providing the background information may posts and threads assume you already know, it covers general setup concerns that are not considered "issues" in the other article. The two cross link and go hand-in-hand. Between them they may not cover everything, but are intended to be your "first stop".

If you do encounter a problem or solution not covered in either article, they both have linked threads for reporting additions or corrections at the very top. That's how we improve them.
