Companion weapons

I ran into abit of trouble trying to get a companion weapon to work as intended. I configued said weapon to use the ammo556mmRobot ammo like other compainion weapons and even alted the orginal core script form the Orginal Lucy West Companion mod to include the ammo556mmRobot ammo type when unlimited ammo was turned on. However, Lucy will fire a few shots from the new weapon then switch out to the laser pistol after a little bit. Now I dunno if it is due to the weapon taking damage or is actually spending ammo. I do know that most of the companion weapons are all set to unplayable and can not be picked up. My questsion is does this function make companion weapons not take damage or actually use the ammo for them or I am missing something else?
