ruvuk
I've been playing Skyrim for a couple of years now, and I thought I was on top of things, but now I'm wondering if I somehow managed to destroy the game. I've removed ALL of the mods, and the game is still a wreck. Specifically, the body animations no longer work--at all; the characters are all standing around like stiff-armed scarecrows. I tried starting a new game, and there were no bodies in the wagons or riding the horses--the wagons were empty and the horses riderless. As the wagons approached Helgen, a solider was standing in the road (unmoving), and the wagons rode through him. The gate to Helgen didn't open, and the wagons sort of piled-up in front of the gate. (Hard to see what was going on.) I'd like to know what caussed this--what I did? But I'm also OK with just getting my game back. Can I download a fresh copy from Steam?? Or buy a fresh copy from Steam? My computer is old and creaky and due for a grand replacement in about 2 months. The game sets my render level at Very High, but I've never thought my old machine was really good enough for Skyrim. Sorry I can't give any specs on the machine, but the old buddy has been doing OK with Skyrim all this time, so I can't see how the problem could lie with the computer. Thank you for reading. Kraggy
I don't have any ideas what may have broken but it certainly sounds like it could be your hardware if you can't identify anything you did that likely triggered the problem. You certainly should be able to downoad a clean copy of the game from Steam to start-over. I needed to do this after I wanted to put my Steam stuff on a different drive but the Steam client wouldn't let me (it kept telling me the new drive was 'read-only' when it patently wasn't), I uninstalled Steam and re-installed it on the new drive. In your case I'd expect to simply move the 'Skyrim' tree from the 'common' folder in the Steam tree (just to keep a copy of it) and then the Steam client should detect Skyrim is no longer there and put it back to 'Install' state allowing you to download a fresh copy. ruvuk
@Kraggy: I pulled the Skyrim tree from the Common tree, as you suggested. But when I click on the Steam tray icon to start Skyrim, I get a pop-up message that there is no executable and to look at the Steam Support page dealing with this. I did that and was told that I needed to:Navigate to your Steam installation folder (~C:\Program Files\Steam). Delete the 'appcache' folderSo I did that. But I'm still getting the "no executable" message. I'd like to get a clean copy of Skyrim, but I'm at a loss as to what I should do/try next. Thank you. vram1974
There's a number of possible issues. 1. First you need to run FNIS to reset the animation paths. Or simply delete the old animations so SKyrim will use vanilla animations.2. You broke the animations of everybody in loaded cells. You can use this mod: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/56856/?3. You deleted the mods but didn't do a clean install. Yes, I would advice nuking your Skyrim directory and redownloading from Steam. This can be done as many times as you wish. For a bare bones but stable install google "Anatriax's Wonderful World of Skyrim" and follow only steps 1-3. Add more steps at your own prerogative. Deleted5770650User
It sounds to me like steam thinks it is still installed. Try to uninstall it, and then install it again.
ruvuk
@ vram1974: Your info was really helpful, and I really appreciate your taking the time to help me out. I'm not quite out of the woods yet, so if you're still reading, I could use your help again. I ran FINIS (which I always forget) and added the mod that resets the frozen animations. The animations all seemed 100%-OK after that. But then it occurred to me that maybe running FINIS was all I'd needed, so I removed the mod that fixed the frozen animations. The animations all still looked good, so I thought I was in the clear. But now something else is wonky: I don't seem to have control over my player inventory--specifically, items are not removed from my inventory when they should be. If I sell something, or drop it, or move it to some random container--it doesn't leave my inventory. (Drives me nuts.) I even tried used the Console command, "player.removeitem," but no luck there, either. The one exception I've found is when I move something from my player inventory to a container in my player home. Then the item is removed from my player inventory, . . . but the item is not added to the container in my home. The item seems to have just disappeared. And advice about this? Maybe I should use a new topic for this?? @ chevyowner: It hadn't thought about uninstalling Steam to get the fresh download, but I will try that if I can't get my game sorted. I'm getting a new machine in about 2 months, and I was thinking that that would be the best time to start over with Skyrim. Would you know anything about my wonky container problem?? Thanks, everybody, a lot.
Deleted5770650User
Sorry I don't have any ideas for that container problem.
ruvuk
I had no idea how to fix the container problem, and I thought the odds were good that fixing the problem would require the help of one of the players who really understood how the tech aspects of the game worked. And I didn't want to even post for that kind of help--just too much to ask. But I'm OK; I just started a new game, and everything worked fine. Very sincere thanks to you guys.
