harshm
Hey guys! I was just wondering if any of you know of any rare books in Oblivion. I have two main toons, one is a mage scholar who buys all the books he can find. Another is a Crazed scholar named "Reaper" who must kill at least one person a night and steal all their books. if he fails, he must kill five people the following night. A LITTLE creepy. But yeah, if anyone out there knows about any rare books that i cant get by going to a store and buying/stealing then tell meh! :)
Ferryt
Well, I can tell you one very rare book. There is, in fact, only a single one of these in the entire world, and you're going to have to work your butt off to get it. It's called the Oghma Infinium. To get it you'll have to do every single one of the Daedric shrine quests (15 in all), culminating in the one for Hermaeus Mora, and you'll have to get to level 20 before you can even get that quest. Furthermore, there are several situations along the way where you can screw things up and never be able to take on Hermaeus Mora's quest. I did say you'd have to work for it. On the other hand, considering the nature of "Reaper", I think he'd enjoy doing these quests even if the final reward wasn't as good as it is. ub3rman123
A good challenge is to find all of the rare book sets, because they require a lot more wandering around and stealing them out of peoples' houses (Because nobody has all of them at once). These book sets are A Dance in Fire, Poison Song, Feyfolken, Mystery of Talara, and the 2920 series. I remember the olden days of Morrowind where you could run around collecting all 30 sonnets of Vivec.
chaospearl
I remember the olden days of Morrowind where you could run around collecting all 30 sonnets of Vivec. You still can. 36 Lessons of Vivec adds all the books of sermons to the game, but they're not available in shops. You can find them in people's houses, mainly Dunmers. Oh and WOOT FOR MINECRAFT!

ub3rman123
You can find them in specific (Seemingly random) locations. It's more of a luck thing than it making sense by location as far as I see. For example, you can only find the book 2920, Sun's Height (v7) in the Black Horse Courier Office. Most of the books in those series (Particularly the skill book ones) can only be found in one or two locations.
chaospearl
I'm almost positive that some of the Mystery of Talara books only show up in loot chests from particular monsters. Necromancers and conjurers if I recall. Not sure which volume(s) are the ones you have to find in the loot -- there are only 5 books in the series -- but those books are my favorite story in Oblivion and since each volume ends in a cliffhanger I was pretty mad to find them all, when I first ran across them. I ended up having to Google because I felt like I'd looked through every house and shop in Cyrodiil and couldn't find the volumes I needed, and I found out that at least one of them (and I think it's two) can't be bought or stolen. You have to get lucky to find it in treasure.
Relecs
I've just recently created a thief who steals only valuable jewelry from places outside of the imperial city and rare books, so this thread was relevant to my interests. One good book if you want a very rare book is the scouts journal it sits beside the countess of bruma's throne in a display stand and it is the only one of its kind. Valued at 750 septims.
