Tony the Wookie
Well, there's a couple of problems with that. Deserts are a function of rainfall patterns, and to be blunt, Nevada is shielded from Pacific monsoons by two very high and sharp mountain ranges. Nuclear winter would have exactly zero effect on the long term rainfall patterns. A better solution would have been a long term hydrological change in Nevada pre war. Better solution is to choose a setting that actual fits. If you are going to nuke everything primitive anyways, why not make a whole new worldspace in anyplace that is not Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. Set your mod in Nebraska, that would be fun. Throw in some Furry Deathclaws and a Beastlord enemies and you've got yourself a game.
devinpatterson
For the love of God, the man was scientist as well as a writer. From wikipedia; <Michael Crichton> "was an American best-selling author, physician, producer, director and screenwriter, best known for his work in the science fiction, medical fiction and thriller genres". Now I wouldn't want to be the one to determine who is and who is not a scientist, but if being a scientist carries a great deal of weight for you, I'd refer you back to a worldwide majority of scientists who specialize in the field of climate study, and their consensus. Morgwynn
{}:x:x:{}:::::::::::::::::::> Handwavium <::::::::::::::::::{}:x:x:{} " a term used when a science fiction writer "waves his hands" at reality and hard science for the sake of the plot. Refers to all unrealistic or impossible technology, such as faster-than-light travel, teleportation, artificial gravity, etc.Handwavium is extensively used in movies, more so than in literature, due to the need to mass market movies to a scientifically ignorant public and because filming realistic space travel is relatively expensive. Morgwynn
The Fallout: Universe is either a parallel or divergent timeline or an alternate dimension. Before the bombs fell on October 23rd, 2077 there was a sci-fi age of ray guns and robot butlers so Handwavium applies to the Fallout: Universe. Now since the closest thing we have had to a global nuclear winter was Mount Tambora in 1816 and Krakatoa in 1883 that changed the global weather patterns of the time. A nuclear winter isn't a hypothesis and it isn't a fact but enough evidence exists to support it as a theory. In the parallel or divergent timeline of Fallout Handwavium can be applied to explain a nuclear winter, granted a plausible explanation would be better but in the absence of fact Handwavium. Tony the Wookie
You can make up whatever you want in Fallout, it is a videogame. No need to follow the rules of science. But as someone who lives in the Great American Desert, if I saw a mod that made it covered in snow, I would just laugh at the person who made it. Seriously, if you are going to make a mod like this, pick any other place in this country, throw a dart at a map and I can guarantee you where it lands would be a better choice than Vegas. charwo
Yeah, you can also use your dingy as fish bait, but you really shouldn't. There's a huge difference between Fallout's retrofuture aesthetics in terms of designs (no lasers wouldn't be logically built to act like that but from 1880 logic, the fact that we ban HP ammo in war would be absurd too), and changing the rules of physics. I played Fallout from the beginning, before Chris Avelone screwed it up, and it was actually a major plot point to understand the difference between pulp science (Radiation turn you into the HULK) and the fairly hard science of the FEV project (a technically feasible scenario by a morally bankrupt military industrial complex). Fallout 2 was a great game, but it really missed the point of the original Fallout, the whole Fallout Bible is an affront to logic and we really, REALLY should demand good logical writing that is as realistic as possible. It's why I enjoyed the logs from Honest Hearts so much....other than the overdone Black Rain thing (the Fallout coming down after Halloween 2077). That said, I would very much enjoy a Great Plains new land to Courier in.As for Micheal Criton, I would remind you he was published just as he graduated with an MD from Harvard. Being scientifically literate is a requirement just to get into most medical programs. O-Chem is about the hardest of hard sciences, and his BA was in Biological Anthropology, which is no soft science
Morgwynn
Ok some really good points. So how would we see something like a Primitive New Vegas mod happening as say a Quest Mod or a New Lands Mod.? Also were I live in Canada is a semi arid desert region so certain parts of B.C. would be out. How about some place near the rocky mountains that stretch from Canada to the U.S.A. or maybe around the Great Lakes so ruined landmarks from both sides of the border could be used.? I'm not very familiar with the topography of the U.S.A. so I would have to rely on the knowledge of someone with more experience in that area. Certainly the weapons are already in the game, the tribal pack has throwing spears that would fit into a primitive environment fairly well. I guess the big thing is location, location, location hard to decide on the right real estate for a mod like this to happen in. Also after 200 years a nuclear winter would have started to wind down about 50 years prior to the mod being made which would allow for temperate climates in certain regions. Tony the Wookie
I would say South Dakota. I would like to see how primative cultures would react to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments. Maybe they would create some crazy religion where the presidents were gods and such.
charwo
I would so want a version of Ayla's party from Chrono Trigger at the base of Mount Rushmore. Dancing, primitive party music, poi bowls the circumference the size of small tables! A drunk scientist that the will insist the night after she was a perfect lady instead of a drunken pig! Morgwynn
So I was looking through the Fallout: New Vegas wiki to see if there are any kind of tribal weapons and it turns out there is a ton. Throwing Knife Spear <-( Dead Money ), Throwing Spear <-( Caesars Legion ), Tomahawk <-( Honest Hearts ), Throwing Hatchet, Rebar Club <-( Honest Hearts ), Lead Pipe, The Humble Cudgel <-( Unique Weapon ), War Club <-( Honest Hearts ), Throwing Knife, Bladed Gauntlet, Bear trap Fist <-( Dead Money ), Mantis Gauntlet, Spiked Knuckles, Yao Guai Gauntlet, Tire Iron, Pool Cue, Nail Board and a couple others that I'm probably forgetting that would fit into a primitive world space.
