superflossman
Hello, err... forum people! I'm experiencing a problem with Oblivion that happens right after I click "Play." Basically, it says that It is unable to locate Oblivion.esm. I checked under data files, and It was present, and a check was in the box next to it. I haven't played Oblivion for a while, and just picked it back up. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Hickory
Try Bben's complete uninstall/reinstall procedure, as you may have a corrupt installation.
superflossman
Try Bben's complete uninstall/reinstall procedure, as you may have a corrupt installation. I don't think that's the case. Oblivion's worked fine for me before. I recently got my computer back from a virus-removal service. The guy who fixed it for me also showed me MSconfig, and unchecked some stuff to help my computer run faster. Could the problem lie there?

Even more reason to do a complete reinstall. Your choice. [The guy who fixed it for me also showed me MSconfig, and unchecked some stuff to help my computer run faster. Could the problem lie there? Yes. MsConfig is for troubleshooting only, not for streamlining your system -- and don't let anybody tell you otherwise, no matter if you hand over cash or not. bben46
My guess is this 'virus removal service' removed more than viruses (viri?) :whistling: If they managed to remove the Oblivion references from the Windows Registry, It's not going to find parts of the game. I you want every little service for every piece of software running all the time I guess that's true.

If you want services disabled, you use services.msc NOT MSConfig. Simple.

Disabling it in msconfig disables it in services, I can also hide all MS services to make it easier to sort through and enable/disable all services at a time. I can can also easily modify startup programs that are not services. There is no disadvantage to using msconfig over the services console to disable a service. I wouldn't use either unless you know what your doing though.
superflossman
Thanks, everyone. You've all given me great advice. I'm going to attempt an uninstall/reinstall just as soon as I find the case, and that weird code thing with it.

I repeat: MsConfig is a troubleshooting tool, not to be used lightly, and not to be used as a streamlining tool.
