F4c2a
I noticed when people talked about crashes in mod discussions they mostly referred to CTD's, that is, Crashes To Desktop. But when my Oblivion crashes my screen goes black - I can still hear background sounds - Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't help, Alt+Tab does nothing, only way out is to hard boot with reset or holding down power. This is the only kind of crash I've ever received, except for the exit-game-CTD, which I don't really mind.
Hickory
For starters, try using weOCPS and FastExit. Requires OBSE. If those two plugins don't help, and you continue to have to reset, it sounds like either a hardware or driver issue, possibly sound related (possibly) -- since you can still hear sound, it may be that the audio drivers have gone into an infinite loop and locked up the system. Having said that, it could also be a myriad of other things from malware to overheating.
F4c2a
Wouldn't background sounds still running rather mean that it's something other than the soundcard? :P But yeah, a crapton of possibilities if it's hardware related. I'll instal Earle's, 'twas my next planned step, but I don't expect it'll fix a whole lot since its supposed to just prevent crashes... Which is great too, but, yeah. Sound drivers are notorious for going into infinite loops -- the sound can appear to play on as normal while waiting for some function to return that never does, or it can go into broken record mode, or lock up with no sound at all. David Brasher
Your crashing situation is not typical. Most people crash every day, but have the computer return to functionality immediately or within 45 seconds. (Or they can get task manager to end the task.) Oblivion does not generally lock up computers so that you have to hit the off switch and reboot. WoOCPS and Fast Exit are great programs, but I would rate them at 50% effective. Because Oblivion is the way it is, you are still going to have lots of CTDs and times when your computer freezes up for 45 seconds on exit or crash. But they are both certainly worth having. (But all this is for after you find a solution to your unique hardware problem.)
