In the Universe

Let's say a new planet was discovered that could support carbon based life forms. Or perhaps they terraformed an uninhabitable planet to make it habitable.

Then let's say, you along with a bunch of other people were given the opportunity to pack up your things and move to the newly established colony on this planet. It's a great opportunity that no human being has ever had before - the chance to go to a whole new world and start a new life. And the chance to be part of a truly glorious, great and incredible thing, a massive step forward for humanity.

You can take all of your worldly possessions with you, and you can take all of your family (including pets) along.

The colony also already has all of the basic necessities of a community - access to clean water, electricity, housing, free health care access, schools, etc, etc, so no worries about those things.

The drawback, however, is that due to the distance and the costs of keeping you all cryogenically sustained for the duration of the trip, it is extremely unlikely that you will ever be allowed to back out of the offer and return to Earth, ever. So, you won't ever see your old home or anyone you left behind ever again. You also do not truly know what this new world is like, or what your new life will be like in the colony, either, so there's no guarantee you'll be completely happy with what you get.

Would you take this chance of a lifetime, or would you choose to stay here on Earth?

If we had to be cryogenically suspended to get there then the world/culture we might wish to return to would in all probability not exist in the state we would wish to return to. So I suppose the best thing to do would be what humanity has done for the last two hundred thousand years or so and make the best of the situation. I mean seriously, any society which could sustain the services you mention in the long term would have to be competent economically and developmentally

Scientists have actually FOUND a planet that they believe can support carbon based life.

Unfortunately, if we ever get to the stage in technology that would allow us to actually get there, or scan for any other life forms there, we will just hobble on over and wreck it like we did to Earth.

This should probably be in the debate section though.
