Is it ok to port content from a game into NV?

I was under the impression that it actually wasnt allowed to port content from any PC game into NV. Yet Ive seen tons of established mods on nexus titled "Ported X Content" - whats going on here? is it or isn't it allowed? Not really a fan of double standards.

Some game studios have given their permission to have their stuff ported and used in mods. GSC Game World is one of them, thus you can see a number of mods on the Nexus with models and textures taken directly from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. Many, many other studios have not given their permission, thus ported content from their works is not allowed.

To upload a mod that uses assets taken directly from another game or someone else's mod, I believe you must prove to the moderators of this site that you actually have permission from the original author.

Nice one, cheers for explaining that to me.

What I dont get is - how come sites like (that site.. ends with 'underground') allow it and are still online if there ripping content without permission? I would have thought various companies would have sued them already for redistributing their content without their permission.

They actually could very well recieve a Cease and Desist order from the companies that haven't given permission to do so, and if they don't they could be sued. Which will close the site perminitly, Dark0ne doesn't want that to happen here at all, he wants Nexus to stay around for all modders and mod users thus the reason ported content isn't allowed unless writen permission is given. Some of the Ported items you do see on nexus that come from Fallout 3 are mods which had permission given to bring over, and some brought over by the very people who created them for Fallout 3. Also note though that said sites which do provided the ported material are around and are great for screen shots but the nexus staff does take down images that are confirmed ported as it is a form of advertising thus ask people not to post such images.

How do we go about reporting them? So not only do they rip without permission, but Ive heard from alotta people they are also very nazi-like in their collective attitude. And eat small kittens, Dosnt sound like a community thats really healthy for the fallout scene in my opinion.

In this case I think it would be great for this community to be proactive and rid the scene of these scum.

You mentioned that we could get permission to port content from fo3 to nv, how would one go about doing that? simply going to the bethesda forums? Im intrested in the urban buildings in fo3 to create a city in nv.

And is it also just a matter of accessing various game websites and email them asking for permission to use their content in a nv mod or is it more complicated then that?

The internet is a huge place with lots of things some individuals may disagree with. Do you really feel strongly enough to start a war?

First, look to see if the FNV data files already include the models you want. It is pretty likely. Almost all, but not actually all, of the FO3 content is "left over" in the FNV files. Anything which is left over, you can use without any further permission. If you really, really need something from FO3 which is not in FNV, you can create your mod so that a player who already owns FO3 can use it, but a player who doesn't own FO3 will see missing models/textures. That is legal, and several mods on the nexus do this.

That is the only way. But, they probably won't answer.

@vermillion73; Many of the assets from FO3 are included in the FONV files, even many that are not used in the game. Any of those are allowed as they are already included in the FONV assets.

If the assets are from a user made mod, you need to get the permission of the author to use their work. If the assets are from another game, you need some kind of dicumentation allowing you to use their game assets in your mod. Not many gaming companies are going to allow it as those works are copyrighted. However, it never hurts to ask.

As for 'going after' any other sites. That is against our policy. We do not allow links to those sites that do allow copyright infringement as a matter of protecting this site. However, what they do on their site is not our concern. We are not, and do not want to be the internet police. And we prefer that other websites not be attacked in posts on the Nexus.

Never realized you guys took up such an interesting position towards these vile kitten eating criminals.

Thanks for the info guys, your talking about extracting the shizz from the bsa right? Already knew about that. And that it contained loads of stuff from fo3. Problem is locating them in the geck, IF only someone could create a list of all the assets that are in the geck, then put those in categories and list the shorthand names for them, in a word document - jesus, now that would be a godsend.

I guse we can still dream ey..
