Mysteriously abundant cigarettes with no source?

I was just cruising around in NV today, just started a new game and I'm a bit low on caps. So I thought I'd go trawling through some garbage dumpsters and grab some junk to sell for a quick buck. After looking through a few, I had found multiple cartons of cigarettes and I thought to myself for the thousandth time "Where on earth do all of these extreme amounts of unsmoked and seemingly unwanted cigarettes come from?" Surely in a post apocalyptic world set hundreds of years after a nuclear war and with no tobacco companies that I've ever seen, every smoke on earth would be long gone. But no, there's so many that people don't even care about them at all and they leave them EVERYWHERE. I nearly can't go five minutes without finding some sort of smokes.

So I thought I'd post my thoughts here and suggest to any bored modders out there some kind of tobacco themed mod. This isn't a request and I'm not making any demands or anything like that. It could be any kind of mod from simply adding a factory that you can look around in, to working for or founding a tobacco company or taking one over, or even making a tobacco plantation that you could own. There's a lot that could be done with it. Anyway if anyone decides to tinker with it, have fun and please share it with the community if it turns out nicely.

it's the tabbacco lobby at work, since you can't consume them like the 200 year old candy apples, and the raiders that came from the Vault that was once a maximum security prison, used them instead of bottle caps as currancy.

Nice theory, the inmates of that vault/prison must have had an outrageous stock of smokes and a well organized distribution team to evenly spread masses of cartons all throughout the Mojave. Well played tobacco lobby, well played. That's thinking ahead at its finest lol

Lighters survived the war, the Courier uses one to light his dynamite sticks. Also, you can find an engraved lighter that used to belong to Benny.

Only problem with that is when you look at it in the geck, its a cigarette. I was going to fix it so that after getting Benny, I could display on a desk or something.

---------------------------"Daddy, Where Do Cigarettes Come From?"---------------------------

Well we are talking about the 1950's here, a time in America where people who didn't smoke were complete freaks.

Likely there is no explanation for the many cigarettes found in Fallout in the lore. They're simply there because smoking is a large part of the culture that Fallout has parodied since Fallout 1.

So perhaps someone should write about or make a place where perhaps some robots are still making cigarettes, or perhaps a caved-in hidden factory could be made into one of the many generic destroyed buildings of the Mojave.

If it does become a mod then all sorts of new things might make it more interesting.

Here are just some basic ideas that could be expanded on.

  •
  • New lighter look when using dynamite sticks.
  • Cigars, Cigarettes, etc. with special properties (like with nuka-cola, and then you had nuka quantum.)
  • Maybe collectable lighters like Snowglobes/Bobbleheads but from improtant people in the wastes (Benny, Papa Khan, Caesar, Pres., Remnants, Marcus, etc.)
  • New Crafting recipes for tabacco based drugs/poisons.
  • Funny Companion possibly (Robot Smokes a lot? or maybe a Tribal named He Who Smokes Everything.)
  • Cigarette based weapons somehow? (Maybe just a gun with the brand name on it, could be a reward for collecting the lighters)
  • New enemies (Possibly a mutant spore plant from tabacco, or Nicotine addicted Super mutants)
  • New Cigarette Based Perks (Black Lungs, Fog Breather, etc.)
  • etc.

Those were just of the top of my head, I'm sure if someone really worked at it, that it could be a cool little mod.

Edit: Here is a quick poster I made for this quest idea.

Sometimes....when a mommy cigarette and a daddy cigarette love each other very much...

But really. This comes from my own eyes. Eastern US casinos are mostly American Indian tribal operations residing on reservation land; and so, are subject to the same tax codes as any other businesses on tribal land. (ie. No taxes, or at least low taxes)

Long story short: chain smokers like to buy cigarettes in bulk when visiting a casino. Sometimes just roadtripping to get cheap smokes alone.

Maybe sometime before 2077, most of Las Vegas becomes Indian owned land again, and we're looking at the Lost Hoard of the Hopi Peace Pipers?
