todd92371
Wow.Last night removed the compass from the HUD. So... no compass and POI's showing up in a compass. I retained the quest marker and markers on the map. I figured one would have a map with markups where you have been.Well... I had to go cross country to find a fort. I took bearings off the sun after leaving a road. Had to really pay attention to the terrain. Each small battle could leave you dis-oriented. I soon realized that I needed to take a quick location before I fought. I was way way way off on hitting my first target. It took a lot longer. But... It was a freaking blast exploring and trying to figure out where to go. Does anyone else play without a compass on the HUD?I know it's a fantasy world. But, it just seems that a compass doesn't fit. To each is own though! :) todd
TehBuddha
Heh, sounds quite fun. I might just give it a go if I ever actually get round to playing oblivion again :teehee:
Axxaw
I think I'll just stick to knowing where I'm going, although I wish I could do something to remove those quest markers from the compass. After trying with Cobl and Wrye bash (and both) I've just kind of given up hope really.
TheSwedishPancake
I do the same thing sometimes and I absolutely love it. Getting lost in Oblivion isn't quite as unsettling as it was in Morrowind, since Oblivion is exponentially easier and there aren't Cliff Racers everywhere. ^^ But yes, exploring with no compass is a lot of fun. It makes you feel like a real adventurer. I remember the first time I did the Weatherleah quest, I had no compass enabled. I was told it was "South of Chorrol, north of Fort Carmala." Well, it was nowhere to be found until I ventured south of Fort Carmala.

Before- MMM and less respawn points.. it wasn't as fun. Now- it's a whole new world out there. Fun stuff.
chaospearl
I've always played without the quest marker, and I use a mod to prevent location markers from showing up on my map until I've made it back to civilization and asked a guard to mark up my map for me. I do adore that mod -- it frustrated me that even without the "You Are Here" player marker on the map, I'd still always know where I was once I came across Fort Whatever and suddenly I'd be able to check my map and see exactly where the marker for the fort had appeared. Now if I'm out exploring and stumble onto a new location, I still have no idea where the hell I am because I won't get that location's marker placed onto my map automatically. Never tried playing without the compass to tell me which direction I'm heading in. I'll have to do that sometime. Sounds like a blast. I really wish there were a way to stop map markers from showing up at all, period. Major cities and towns, sure. Obscure ruined forts and caves nobody's been to for fifty years? Not so much. One of these days I'll make my own mod for that, spend some time in the CS removing map markers one by one.

And, it makes sense.
stars2heaven
I havent played without a compass, it does sound interesting. I do use map marker overhaul though. I use some of it's configurations to remove certain quest markers, remove my location arrow on the map, and make map markers have to be much closer to me before I see them. That makes it a lot more difficult on its own. Not having a compass in addition would make things.... even more difficult.
