ElvenChaos
Poasted this on the official forums, but wanted to see if anyone had ideas here too.... So, my game was running fine (as far as Oblivion goes, anyway :P ) up until about February. I thought maybe it was due to my upgrading OBGE to the latest version, and I WAS having a save game/graphical issue with that, so I started a brand new game, no biggie. It fixed those issues, only to create a crashing issue. It would crash like you wouldn't believe, up until the point where I could no longer even load my game because it'd just crash seconds into the game being loaded up. SO, I upgraded some of my out dated mods (Better Cities, Oblivion XP, etc..), then downloaded BOSS, had it work it's magic, got my load order fixed (not that it was too much of a mess, but still), removed OBGEv2.dll (since I know it can cause issues for some people, even though I really like it, boourns...side note: I used the Shderlist.txt for this mod, NOT the Support.esp, since I know that can also help avoid problems a lot too), deleted my Oblivion.ini, so the game could create a fresh one, and then started yet another NEW game, in hopes that my crashing issue would be solved. And lo behold, my new game ran beautifully....for about an hour and a half, and then the crashing came back. And now I'm back to square one where I can't even load up my last save, because it'll crash seconds into the game after all my shaders/obse plugins and junk are done loading in the background. I can, however, revert to an earlier save, but once I reach that point where the crashing started in the more current save..or if I try to fast travel...BOOM, crashing is back, and the cycle continues. There's CLEARLY a compatibility issue somewhere I think, but why it doesn't take effect right away, makes no sense....so I'm lost. So, I doubt OBGE was to blame, like I thought. I've also NOT installed any new mods since all this started (I do have Nehrim, but that's in it's own directory, and I installed that last year), aside from upgrading some to newer versions..and besides this is a new game anyway, so conflicts shouldn't be an issue, right? My thoughts come down to it either being my video driver (Catalyst 10.11's) or the 64bit 4GB EXE Patcher isn't doing it's job?? I do believe I fixed my Oblivion.exe ages ago..last year, and no issues came of it, so I dunno what's going on. Perhaps it is my driver..and I will try the 10.10's or something..but first I wanted to post my mod order and stuff for some input! I have:Win7 Home 64bitAMD Athlon II 4x 9554gb OCZ DDR3Radeon 5850 1gb These are my obse plugins (latest version 19b):http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/1128/13281971.png Mod order: Oblivion.esmunderdark.esmTR_OoT_Main.esmGTAesgaard_2.esmZedar.esmMorrowind_ob.esmTribunal_ob.esmBloodmoon_ob.esmWindfall.esmMathFunctions.esmScreenEffects.esmEnhancedWeather.esmMD_Saddle_Master.esmChildren Of Rourken.esmCyrodiilUpgradeResourcePack.esmKvatch Rebuilt.esmBetter Cities Resources.esmOpen Cities Resources.esmTantrivayliaChimer.esmShieldOnBack.esmDXtoVK.esmTRoN.espTNR - LHammonds
#1 - Remove all mods, the 4GB patch and everything else foreign to vanilla Oblivion. #2 - Make sure it is version 1.2.0406 (IIRC), if not, patch it up with the official patches only. #3 - Once you have Oblivion patched with nothing else messing around with it, start a new game and make sure it works for a couple of days to ensure you have no hardware-related issues. #4 - Introduce your most favorite mod and only that one mod...then play it for a few hours. #5 - Introduce your next most-favorite mod and play it for a few hours. #6 - Repeat #5 until you start seeing the crashes coming back and then you will know which mod (the last or next to last one loaded) is the culprit. I would do this with all non-obse or other external requirements 1st. Then start introducing the more complicated add-ons later in the process. rededge
It appears also that you have installed Oblivion into Program Files- this will cause problems. When you re-install from scratch ensure the game is loaded outside of the default location. All I do is simply alter C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion to C:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion.
ElvenChaos
I've heard of that causing problems but never experienced any until now. However, I will reinstall in the Games folder or something, just to see if that IS the problem. And do the one by one mod reinstall, of course....oi. So much work, but I'm desperate to have a working Oblivion at least until Skyrim.
LHammonds
Well, having it installed to the default folder where Vista/Win7 has extra security (UAC) won't cause it to not work by itself, it is mainly when you go to extract archives to the "Data" folder which will not ever let you extract sub-folders from the archive (such as the all-important Meshes and Texture folders). People get around that by extracting to a temporary folder and then copy/pasting into the "Data" folder. But yes, if you are going to re-install, it is best to do so outside of "Program Files" to avoid UAC messin with you (thinking you installed a mod properly but didn't) It certainly is a pain to take baby steps like this when you are used to a system that is customized to the max but if you don't know what is causing the crash, then this is the best way to identify the exact problem (sometimes problems are hard to track when it is caused by multiple mods or you "think" disabling a plugin is the same as uninstalling the mod files when it may not). EDIT: Now that I think about it, I have to wonder if your crashes are due to installing a mod improperly....such as extracting an archive to the "Data" folder and UAC security preventing the Meshes and Textures folders from extracting...then you enable the plugin which refers to meshes / textures that don't exist and BOOM, crash to desktop. ElvenChaos
Can that happen even when using OBMM to install mods?? I suppose that could be the problem, though. Luckily most of my mods are omods so reinstalling everything wont be too much of a pain, in a new directory.
LHammonds
hmmm....I never tried an OMOD while Oblivion was in the "Program Files" folder. I only tested the manual archive extraction method. I think OBMM would know if the files were not extracted to Oblivion's data folder though. It is easy enough to perform a verification test. Install an OMOD that includes meshes (NIF files). Once the OMOD turns Blue to show it is activated, right-click on it and click "Info" to show a list of files that were installed. Look for a specific mesh (NIF) or texture (DDS), then use Windows Explorer to navigate to Oblivion's Data folder and see if you can drill down and find that specific mesh or texture file. If it is there, then OBMM can install a mod correctly even if UAC is enabled and Oblivion is in the default folder (assuming that is the case you are testing) I am interesting in hearing the findings of such a test...however, I am not so interested that I would re-install my copy of Oblivion to "Program Files" just to test this case. hehehe. ElvenChaos
Seems it does install files just fine under Program Files. At least there's that. :P I certainly have a long night ahead of me now (good thing I have no work tomorrow). I'm going to try different drivers first since that was the only real change I had made when the crashing began (even though they've caused me no problems with other games..but who knows..).... then move on to the painful stuff, if that doesn't work out. haha....Thanks for the suggestions and help so far!! And at least I still have a perfectly working Nehrim... and Morrowind, if all else fails. Edited March 22, 2011 by ElvenChaos
