Constant crashing/freezing, tried merged patch, busethreadedai, LOOT...

Recommended Posts

Hello! I'm having a lot of issues with getting my Fallout - GOTY from Steam to work properly. It plays fine for 15-20 minutes, often less, then crashes with the usual 'fallout 3 has encountered an error' window or just freezes entirely. I've tried multiple solutions including the INI tweaks, using both LOOT and BOSS to organize it and making a merged patch, but nothing seems to be working. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I have the newest version of FOSE, and my mod list is as follows:

You load list looks like the typical LOOT mess. Use BOSS to sort your load list. Once you have the load list corrected you will then be able to start troubleshooting your game.

If you have STEAM installed in "Program Files", you will continue to have problems using programs that change the executable, like FOSE. There are instructions on STEAM on how to move your installation out of "Program Files".

Unfortunately I can't seem to use BOSS - it detects Skyrim and Fallout: New Vegas, but not Fallout 3 GOTY despite my having it on Steam and in the same directory as the other games. [ (D:) Steamlibrary/steamapps/common/fallout 3 goty]. I also have Steam installed on my D drive. At least, the actual games are there - oddly there's another Steam folder in Program Files (x86) that in the same sort of directory as above has Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas, but not Fallout 3, though the aforementioned folders just have 'installscript.vdf' in them.

I'll try moving the installation for a start and hopefully that'll help, maybe with the crashes, and at the very least so BOSS can hopefully recognize it as I suspect the issues may be connected. Thanks for the help thus far! I'll post what happens in case anyone has similar issues.

With further experimentation, I was able to move Steam out of Program Files and use BOSS, which definitely helped extend playtime! It still freezes and CTDs, but now every hour or so instead of every fifteen minutes. I'm going to keep experimenting to try and stop freezes/ctds entirely, while hoping I don't make things worse, but at least this was right. Thanks!

For the record and anyone with similar problems, I just googled how to move Steam and found this:

  1. Browse to the Steam installation folder for the Steam installation you would like to move (C:\Program Files\Steam by default). Delete all of the files and folders except the SteamApps folder and Steam.exe. Cut and paste the whole Steam folder to the new location, for example: D:\Games\Steam\
