okay, occasionally in Oblivion i'll lose my patience and use the console to give me whatever i need. However, only a few console commands work. whenever i try to add a particular item to my inventory, i get an error message. i know i entered the command right so what could be wrong?

What ID did you use for adding the item? It's not the editor id (Those look like 'WeapAkaviriLongSword' for example) you should be using, you have to use the form id (Like 000024DCA).

If that's not the problem, could you tell us what you entered, and what the error was?

i type in the latter of what you said (000024DCA), and it gives me some sort of error message.

However, i was looking into the problem and i read that Windows XP Media Center Edition (or whatever it's called with the Media Center) would interfere with the console, is this true? and if so, can i fix it?

You DO realize that Povu was giving an example of what FormIDs look like, rather than a specific valid example? It's hardly a surprise that it gives you an error when you use a 9 digit number!

Try this: player.additem 00090616 4

Do you now have four Rusty Iron Daggers in your inventory?

yep, that worked, but i can't get the ressurect command to work, the unlock, or the kill.

With the console opened, you'll have to click on a target with the mouse. For unlock this is a locked door/container, and for resurrect (Watch the spelling!) and kill a npc/creature.

That's because it's "resurrect," lol. Also, like Povuholo said, you need to click on the dead thing, or you could type "resurrect <insert npc/creature id>" that'll work to. For unlock and kill, you do the same thing. Click the container or victim and type "unlock" or "kill" respectively, or "unlock <insert container id>" or "kill <insert npc/creature id>"

Won't work to use kill FormID, unlock FormID, or resurrect FormID.

To call a function on an entity that isn't currently selected, you need to use FormID.function
