KazFoxsen
I'm preparing my first mod and saw in the Mod Etiquette article that you should flag an alpha or beta mod. What exactly is the difference between the two? Since I'm the only one testing my mod right now (It just alters an NPC's look), I want to make sure I label it correctly. Quetzlsacatanango
Alpha is very early, it would be something like proof of concept, submitted for feedback, ideas, and the like. Probably not a playable state. Beta is something closer to releasable condition. The framework is all there, it's playable, but it's still in progress or it is expected that there will still be bugs. It's released in order to be tested so that the author can fix the bugs, etc... They are just designations so players will have an idea what to expect. But you will still have people complaining about your buggy beta mod, and you will still see released, "final" mods full of bugs. So as far as how useful it is to label your files this way, YMMV. rausheim
How I think it works regarding Fallout 3/NV.Alpha: Basically just the special parts, like scripts that does specific things etc. Very very very buggy.Beta: Now we're getting there, more or less like the final release, still very buggy.RC (Release Candidate): Not sure this applies to mods, but meh, I used to be a dev on a major game so it kinda sticks to me lol. Like Version 1, it works as it should, only some minor bugs that you won't find until a certain condition is met.Released: Same as RC, but hopefully less bugs than RC and the next bugs will be fixed in versions :-)
KazFoxsen
Would it be appropriate to call my mod a beta, since it's just an appearance change?
rausheim
If it is something simple that does not require advanced scripting or anything else that can mess everything up, the alpha/beta declaration is not important.
