  1. 1. Can I have a horse?

    • Here's your horse!
    • Get lost, kid!

I would like a horse fit for a cowboy.

This mod might be incredibly hard or easy to make depending whether or not you could use an oblivion horse. The game engine hasn't changed much since then. Is it even possible? We do have a motorcycle mod and it's awesome, but I want a horse.

Idea Update: This might be impossible, but I want to be able to shoot from horseback too please.

This topic has been beaten to death several times. If it was possible, It would have been done already - Actually, several people have been working on this for quite a while. It's not near a s simple as you would think. You not only need a horse, you need a horse skeleton before you can do any animations at all. Animations are based on a simplified skeleton and are one of the most dificult type of mod to make. Then you need animations for riding, slow walk, gallop, getting on, getting off. A control system to control the horse, a way to bind the player to the horse when it moves. Now add the horsey animations (Horse idle animations). Now that you have the PC on a horse, you are going to want NPCs riding too - more scripting than you want to think about.

Obsidian didn't give us the tools to make a horse, and the Oblivion horse cannot be used for copyright reasons. - Anyone stealing the Oblivion horse would automatically be banned. So, someone has to make the tools to make the horse before they can make the horse.

It's not only hard, but likely harder than you can imagine if you haven't tried to do animations. But as I said someone has been working on it so we MAY see it someday.

The horse in Fallout is not an impossible task anymore, but sadly as bben46 said, it can never be published due to the copyright. Of course, the modder can publish a convert program instead of a regular mod containing horse mesh/animation/etc.., and the program will read TES4 horse stuff from your harddisk to produce Fallout-usable horse files. (In short, the mod will contains no TES4 stuff but a convert program only, that definitely avoid copyright issue<- am I right???). Unfortunately, not all modders are modding for public demands, making this kind of mods....ummm..never come to real so far.

Anyway, following videos are only experiments for the feasibility, never being usable mods (if it is, then it must be only for personal usage--for horse)

More than rideable Horse (you can fire/reload weapon and even VATS while mounting, but it uses TES4 stuff...)

dual SMGs (another hanging Fallout issue... well it's also not impossible, at least you can fire them in turns...)

Invalidfate's idea was a good one, and confirms that this mod is easier to make than people may claim. We as a community are just spooked by the possibility of a ban because our rules are based on "Whiny Baby Law" (copyright law) which is confusing to the point where we're absolutely terrified to do anything we're unsure of. The good news is we do not have to break them at all.

It should be legal to allow it to be made and used as long as you require the original Oblivion resources to use it, the real crime would come from offering up the original resources as a free download, not from merging one game's resources into another. It's perfectly legal as long as you own both games.

I bet most of us here have already obtained a copy of Oblivion one way or another, so requiring it for the mod wouldn't be too bad.

So yes, this mod is totally possible, easy, and legal as long as every baby gets his bottle.

Gosh since its that easy perhaps you could do it then kiresagara, we are all looking forward to your finished horse mod!

I would love a horse as well, but really if it was so simple then why has no one done it? I doubt it will be as easy as putting oblivion horse animations and meshes in Fallout folders then drop a horse into game with geck...

consider

Morrowblivion

and WHY this mod is not available

then you will understand the error of your position.

Why exactly was Morrowblivion taken down?

I heard a rumor that it went down in a stupid argument between some of the people who worked on parts of it, one of them complained to the mods, the mods overreacted like they always do, and then... EXTERMINATUS! Deleted threads and mass bannings were soon to follow. But that's only what I heard...

Did it require having both games in order to work or not?

Or did it just rip resources out of one game and offer it for download?

Do we really own the games we purchase, or are we just paying for permission to play with their property?

Permission to play with their property, we have no rights over any content in game...only to play with it.

As long as you provide no resources from another game you can prolly make the horse mod with oblivion horses, but this will require you to make all the scripts from scratch unless its been left in Fallout I doubt it though. You will not be able to edit the horse itself or its animations at all then because you could not upload them.

Argument? Bethesda asked nexus kindly to remove it and it did. Every single mesh, texture, esp, esm, nif file is owned by bethesda or where they got them licensed from and every single file that isn't made from scratch or anything that has required their tools belongs to Bethesda. So they have their full right to forbid whatever they like. The fact is that combining two games offers legal issues for Bethesda as the assets are only allowed to be used in 1 game. For 1 simple community mod Bethesda isn't going to pay the amount of games they sold for oblivon x 1 texture/mesh usage payment once some author of them put them before court. We got permission to play with their property....you own nothing but the ability to access the files...that's the reason why you can't upload the whole game as that's called piracy. Atm they condone us modifying and uploading extensions to their game, but they can always pull that action back.

@invalidfate A converter program is what morroblivion started with, so I doubt it'll be allowed uploaded here at all and it's exactly offering the same licence issue. Assets from one game to another isn't allowed unless explicitly permitted to, even if it's from the same company.

Mm..I get the picture although the converter program does not contain any assets from other games but it actually promotes the multiple usage of the them. IMO, this may eventually be refelected on the future sale price of the 3rd-party resource, because an asset now is POTENTIALLY reusable for either Fallout or TES4. Unfortunately, this situation is more critical in Fallout or TES4, since Bethesda provides you a customization develpment kit (GECK and CS), and if Bethesda allows this kind of converter programs, it will look like Bethesda is helping the reuse of all its game assets to the other games, and obviously Bethesda and their content providers will never be happy to see this. Of course, you can do whatever you like to your own game as long as you're not distributing it, so sadly the public easily-made(just compared to build one from scratch) Fallout horse can only live in Utopia cell..

ps. to make/port a horse is NOT a easy task, and at least you need to know how to make a custom animation, but even animation mods are so few....That's why there are no horse/dual wields/bow so far since Fallout3. (I must say...niftools does not support Fallout3 animation making..at least not stright forward..)
