raikien -.-
My old amd 2.08ghz with 7800 gs has finaly had it. It's not quite dead but it's powersupply no longer works correctly. At best I get about 10 mins on the comp before it just shuts off. I am using my intel 6300 duo core 1.87 ghz per core with 2 gigs ram.. bad part is it's running a 5500 geforce nvidia card. I do not have any money to do any kind of upgrading. ok to the optimizing part as is this comp cant even play the cheap nivida demos (dusk) I ran a clean boot and got it down to 30 running processes, overclocked the cheap card some with riva tuner, and increased my paging file to 40m. I believe this comp uses sata drives (can't be sure but they use small thin red wires to connect instead of the flat grey ones. I do not know how to overclock or max out the speed of the ram or the processors. Any tips on making this machine worth the 3-5hour download for oblivion will sure be appreciated. I don't mind playing oblivion on low quality mode as long as I can have all view bars maxed and at least medium textures. and teh mods. I am going to install oblivion tomorrow as I have not dloaded it and I want to wait till I go to bed to start the dload.
Abramul
The video card in the old computer still works, correct? Does your current computer have the same video-card slot as the old one? (For that matter, is the power supply in the working one sufficient to power the slightly-dead one?) (EDIT: Is either computer a Dell?)

My computer handles fine old times are a breeze no crashes when exiting, I have sata raid dives but witout a decent card i guess its just not possible to play oblivion
Mithrandir8
I don't know a ton about the way computers work, but if you saved up enough money wouldn't it be possible to buy a new power supply? You said your old computer power supply is 400W so it should be more than enough to power a 300W demand. If your as tight on money as you say you are, you could search online to see if it is possible for a 400W power supply to be converted to only supply 300W of power. I don't know if this can be done but it is worth a look into.

You could puy a new power supply here http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=PWR i built my computer from parts from this site. you could buy a good 1 for 15-20 USD
Switch
Whoa er, if your power supply is that cheap, I would be very suspicious. There are all sorts of baffling little technical details that they can cheap out on that could leave your PC as a lifeless lemon... I speak from experience here. Generally speaking a decent PSU costs $50 or more.
raikien -.-
It's a pipedream, I don't think 10$ suppys are a good idea. Lol ya thatz wat my oblivion machine is now a lifeless melon.. My fault to begin with tho, i used a powersuppy that was from computer 2-3 years older. It had all the av 17 and stuff stats but this one was 400w and my old one was 250w, and i need 400w to use the card.... now the thing sits there will all my movies.. all my games.. and all my software... lol the new computer eats oblivions loading times for breakfast, guess sata drives will do that.. but with such a weak graphic card it makes no diff i get about 10 fps while outside, I get a decent amount inside.. but i do not play indoors ><
bound by birth
you may have short circuited some stuff. i dont think was a good idea have it looked at to see if more damage was done
raikien -.-
I dont think any damage was done (cant be certain) I got it to stay on for a couple hours one night everything ran fine even got to play oblivion for a while. Usualy it turns on then shuts back off. I think it may be linked to one part on the powersupply the 4 pronged part, I tested it without that prong hooked and it ran fine but without that prong in I dont see anything on the screen. The powersupply was sort of old had all the same ratings as the one I switch out except it was 400w which I needed. Anyway Been trying to get oblivion to run on the New comp. I have all settings low and Im playing in a tiny box in the corner of the screen. Outside I have 20-30 fps, Inside I have over 150 fps until I I start fighting.. when the fist start landing the fps drastically drops to 8-12 bottlenecks.. I tryed virtually every ini tweak to help with no avail. Using no mods atm but seems untill I either get a new card for this comp or get the old comp fix Im ****** edit: today I got the game to take a step toward being playable, set the render frames ahead from 3 to 1 and I got a huge fps boost. battles still bottle neck real bad but indoor battles dont usually drop below 20 fps now.
