seedy
I was playing oblivion for 8 hours quite happily now i had started a new game without companion share or any companion mods. I found before that my saved games would bloat to 20 meg but they are now about 1 . However, now the game is crashing after a few minutes. I have tried earlier saves, and lowered the graphics level, and checked the temperature isn't excessive. I am going to try a new game to see what happens. I'm disappointed though. I hadn't added any mods since i started, and it's at no particular point except that i am near weynon priory. I don't get any error messages except for that annoying attempt by windows to send info to microsoft (don't ask me why, it's not like they'll patch the game or improve windows XP). Has anyone else had this type of problem? How do you troubleshoot it? I played an earlier game for 20 hours and only started again to fix a problem with the eyes not showing up ... the eyes are fine now.
DaedalusPsych
try turning off the music, go to my documents/my games and into the oblivion file and find bSoundEnabled=0turn it to bSoundEnabled=1this worked for me. :D but credit goes to Povuholo he was the one who told me about it :)

I played an earlier game for 20 hours and only started again to fix a problem with the eyes not showing up ... the eyes are fine now. I TRIED A NEW GAME, SEEMED stable until i drew power from an ayleid well, whereupon it crashed. try turning off the music, go to my documents/my games and into the oblivion file and find bSoundEnabled=0turn it to bSoundEnabled=1this worked for me. :D but credit goes to Povuholo he was the one who told me about it :) It's already set to that, I'm guessing because i turned down my settings to below what oblivion recommended just in case it was some sort of issue with my system. I guess i can try removing mods although i would have thought that they couldn't cause that sort of crash. I have been using oblivion mod manager, and i am now trying the 'uncorrupter' for the bsa files. I don't know if it will help, but i can't figure out why it went from being stable to crashing all the time. Argh no luck, it's very random. I've cleaned my system and reinstalled and will now try again. I wish i knew which mods were 'safe'. I only downloaded ones which had been downloaded many times because i figured they would be the most reliable ... Does anyone know if there's a list of mods which are 'safe'? I've read page after page of notes of crashes on this site and i suspect the game itself is buggy. It seems to be a trend in games at the moment, buggier and buggier. EDIT: Merged your posts. Mithrandir8
I've seen something similar to this before. I don't know what exactly is causing trouble for your game, but it is always a good idea to try defragmenting your computer. My game used to crash all the time until I defragmented it and now it hardly ever crashes. It might not solve your problem, but it is always a good try. Abramul
At the original poster: While I can't help with your current problem, if you want to get your previous character's saves down to a reasonable size, you might want to have a look at this topic.
