The Dark Brother
Ok, I've finally bought Morrowind, £3.99, HMV :) What are the main differences I can expect from Oblivion? (apart from combat, I know about that one, if anyone knows of a way to make it more like Oblivion's combat, let me know please!)
Peregrine
Oblivion sucks, Morrowind doesn't. That's the biggest difference. Morrowind has a complex and detailed game world, interesting lore, wide-open gameplay, far more depth in character customization, far better visual design, and is generally a roleplaying game instead of a console action game with a few roleplaying stats tacked on as an afterthought. Abramul
It does, however, suffer from extreme instability. Save often, and rotate your saves.
The Dark Brother
Where can I find the latest patch for Morrowind?
Abramul
Morrowind patches are at the bottom. (3.5 years old)Unofficial optimizer. If you can't use the optimizer, there's an unofficial patch on the same page.
Povuholo
Oblivion: You slash, you hit. You can block whenever you want, with both weapons and shieldsMorrowind: You slash, and it depends on your weapon skill and fatigue whether you hit or not. Blocking is done automaticly, and whether you block or not depends on your block skill. You can only block with shields. Oblivion: Magical green pointers which allow a 5 year old who doesn't understand english finish the majority of quests.Morrowind: You'd better listen (read, there's no voiced dialogue) to the npc's instructions and the journal, because you'll have to find everything yourself. Oblivion landscape: The same everywhere, with the exception of some snow in the north. Morrowind: Diversity. Here's a description. Morrowind's lockpicking and persuasion systems are better than oblivion's too. They actually require the character to have some skill, not you. Of course, whether all these points are good or bad depends on what type of games you like to play.------------------------------------------------ Morrowind patches are at the bottom. (3.5 years old)Unofficial optimizer. If you can't use the optimizer, there's an unofficial patch on the same page. And don't use the exe optimizer and the 1.7 patch together. One or the other. I'd use the exe optimizer. There's also the Morrowind Graphics Extender (MGE) on that page, which allows you to make Morrowind prettier by adding distant land for example. I'd try morrowind without the infinite view distance first, because the fog adds to the immersion.
karkarinus
AFAIK there are some mods that change the combat style slightly for Morrowind, but take my advice - DON'T BOTHER. Take it as a whole new game, don't compare it to Oblivion, and you'll soon see that Morrowind is far, far superior in everything Peregrine said and more. Sure, OB is much more technologically advanced, and MW can get helluva frustrating at first when you get kicked to **** by kwama grubs; but persevere, and after about level 3 you'll start seeing what it's all about. And from there it only gets better! IMO you should only mod it once finished (so like a couple of years down the line :P)
ResidentWeevil2077
Even tho Morrowind is an old game, I still find it just that much better than Oblivion. Sure, I'll always prefer Oblivion's better graphics (altho I am starting to see its flaws), but when it comes to gameplay, Morrowind is still a much more immersive game. Unfortunately for me, I found Morrowind so late that I've never actually been able to play either expansion (Tribunal or Bloodmoon), so I've can't really say I've fully played TES III. Oblivion? Pah, if I ever become a game dev, I'd make an action-RPG that will blow it out of the water. I do have a couple ideas for killer games, but that's top secret, classified info :P . Concilliator
the primary differences in morrowind from oblivion are due to the writers and budget morrowind 4-5 writers with one main writer oblivion 15-20 writers the maiin writer for morrowind did help on oblivion in one quest the DB questline so you can kind of see the difference in depth from the db line and the rest of the guild lines luckily the lore of morrowind -- or that was fleshed out in morrowind adds to oblivion for me even tho oblivion isnt that full of depth I add my own by knowing the lore of morrowind-- lastly in all other es games you take the role of the "shezarrine" the "missing divine" who rises up to save the world when the time is right same in oblivion in morrowind you became a powerful political figure of prophecy the nerevarine sent by azura to redeem the false gods-- and dammit thats just cool plus the wide variety of alien landscapes really made it cool all in all the story of the nerevarine should be continued in game the nameless hero story is just too easy i wish they would try something else like they did in morrowind blah further more Morrowind for life Oblivion is definitely the lesser of the two games story wise
