Any way to fix random crashes when running a truckload of mods?

So I have come to the discovery that as you keep installing more and more mods, Oblivion automatically will become less stable over time. If I understand this correctly, seems that the community has accepted this fact and the best way is just to save often so that if your game crashes after a couple of hours, you do not lose much progress.

 

Last June, I spent over a week of my time modding my Oblivion game, carefully using BAIN for every mod and utilizing Wrye Bash for merges and imports and religiously checking for known mod compatibility problems. Unfortunately though, after installing more and more mods, my game became very unstable, and no matter which mods I temporarily uninstall to find the culprit, it just keeps crashing. And by this I do not mean crashing after a few hours. It always crashes after 2 or three cell changes, usually about one quarter through a load screen from opening a door. I tried so many things already, including trying out all kinds of different heap types and heap sizes in OSR, new save games... nothing worked. Needless to say I gave up on the whole game because of this, but now it's itching again for me to play. I really have all my favorite mods installed and it just feels like I'm finally there, but those crashes... man :sad:

 

By the way I also believe that my machine is quite adequate to run this game with many heavy mods (i7 [email protected], GTX 970, 16GB ram, fast SSD, yadayadayada). But right now I'm wondering wether I've just exceeded Oblivions limit on what it can stand in terms of modding or not. I don't run hundreds of different mods, but the ones I do run are quite heavy.

 

In summary I'm running:

 

  • All unofficial patches + DLC's
  • OSR
  • A combination of quite a few texture mods, including QTP3, Bomret SI textures, a terrain texture pack, several clutter texture packs (jewellry and signs and stuff), an armor and a weapon texture pack, oblicion character overhaul and a creature texture pack
  • Full FCOM
  • Complete UL
  • Complete Better Cities
  • Several sound/music mods
  • Lots of immersion/graphics mods: Weather All Natural, Natural Environments, AWLS, Landscape LOD, Immersive Interiors, Cava Obscura, Let There Be Darkness, ENB
  • Some compatibility stuff like OMOBS and COBL
  • Some game mechanics stuff like Stealth overhaul, sneak detection recalibrated, realistic ragdolls and force, crime has witnesses, realistic leveling
  • Several quest mods

So, is this just too much? Have there been people that have succesfully played on an installation with all kinds of heavy mods combined, such as FCOM+BC+UL+QTP3? Or should I continue looking for incompatibilities?

Would love to hear some input on this...

Looks like your mod list is quite similar to mine except that I use MOO solely instead of using FCOM together. I gave up on using FCOM while also using BC and UL. As you might have noticed, FCOM adds tons of spawn points which means more NPCs actively fighting or moving about. This also means more AI processing which will strain your CPU. Also keep in mind there's a limit on how many mods you can install before the game becomes unresponsive. IIRC, it's 255 mods. Also there's hard limit of 400 files in your data folder that includes all esm/esp and BSAs. Ghosting feature from Wrye Bash will help somewhat but there's a limit to that tool can do so much. My suggestion would be to trim down any mods that you can drop if other mods can do the same job for you. I.e you can probably drop Dungeon Actors have Torches.esp and Exterior Actors have Torches.esp then simply tweak the ini from MOO to do the same thing. Don't be greedy grabbing all the mods; that's asking for disaster. Good luck and have fun modding.

Omg I am having the EXACT same problem as you. I tried disabling Better Cities, and it did fix some of my crashes, however I am still crashing like mad after 2-3 cell changes and I don't know what is wrong... I am now downloading optimized QTP3 textures and some other optimization mods, and will see if those will fix it. It just seems to me that the game can't handle all the stuff I threw at it, so I need to make sacrifices. I am convinced that a FCOM + BC + UL installation is just too goddamn unstable and impossible to pull off, but even with BC disabled, I am still getting crashes. My Oblivion fever is slowly fading away because I've hit a wall and don't know what to do. Shame, I wanted to play it so much before Fallout 4...

Ok so I came up with a fix. So far my game has been stable. The key is to set OSR settings accordingly. Set the heap algorithm to 5, and the size to 600. That did the trick.
