ThomasCovenant
Hi. I would like to weigh in with my opinion(no flames please) about realism in Oblivion. It's a nice thought, except that we use games to escape our "collectively perceived reality."A fight should be like those in the recent movie "The 300".In my Oblivion experience I have taken it upon "myself" to haul a body into a bar-b-que.Nothing happened.Eating some of the reagents should out-right kill you.As an example:nightshade.Absolutely no one misses the people that you murder, sanctioned or not.Killing major predators(wolves, bears) has no effect on the population of the other things that the predators prey on.What do slaughter fish eat?The overheard conversations are inane. No one talks like that."we're all talking about the death of the emporer", "we're all talking about the murder of priests in Anvil".WTF!?But that's right because otherwise these people do NOTHING.The reagents should not grow back in 24 hours or 72 hours. If a plant in "reality" does that then fine. But there is a growing, seeding, die-ing season thing. You can eat but you never use the catalog reading room(outhouse) The wear of weapons: swords. Reality check. A claymore was used like a baseball bat.If your sword was used for slashing and its now dull, you can still beat the crap out of someone with it.If you all still want reality in this game I'll be very happy to explain reality to you.No one has sex but they allude to it.As some others have pointed out, there are no children. If you steal something, and your not caught(via the guard mod), by anyone, no one misses the items that you walked away with.Chameleon doesn't work, "they" still greet you as if you aren't using Chameleon at all.How can your fame be effected if no one notices you committing a crime?BTW if you can't answer or you just don't know. I will accept replies of I don't know and not "Why don't you ask Bethesda?"A "real" evil person does not allow you to realize this until its way too late. How is it that the player is the only person buying from the shops?A knight could not walk under his own strength in full plate armor. Why are there no lances in this game, or flails, or whips such as the scourge from "The Passion of the Christ", or Indiana Jones style bullwhips? For those whom don't know: a flail is the device that is a handle, a chain, and a spiked ball.In some of the mods, they say reality pricing. Well no one except royalty and thieves could afford most of the cheap crap we buy in the shops. Why are there no blacksmiths? A smithy is not in a shop, it's outside and its very loud.No longbows or crossbows. If you use a soul stone on a ghost or wraith shouldn't the enemy just disappear leaving nothing behind? The undead would have no souls.Who's mythology are we using here?Zombies are a part of the Voodoo religion. The real vampire was not a vampire at all. late 1300's Transilvania, Romania. Vlad the Impaler. His surname, Dracula, translates to the Devil.(thanks to whomever that corrected my knowledge.)Are the females in the mages' guilds witches? Why is everyone humanoid? wouldn't Argonians lay eggs, The Khajitt would have 6 nipples not 2.Do all orcs look like they're created by the wizards at Blizzard? No one can swim in any kind of armor.Well, maybe the Argonians can.ARE YOU STILL SURE THAT YOU WANT "REALITY" TO INTRUDE?There is no one maintaining the infrastructure. Why are bounties only collected by the town guards?I'm sure some enterprising adventurers would like to earn gold(real value unknown)playing as a bounty hunters. What is Tamriel's economy based on?If you commit murder and are caught, shouldn't you be executed?Reality check:There are no Masters of martial arts. No. Really. Ask them. They will all say that even they are still learning. To stop learning is to be damned, and /or to die.How long do the citizens live?In the "Dark Ages" you where considered old IF you reached the age of 40.Where does all the gold come from? That is the shopkeepers keep all of the gold that you give to them. It's not taxed.A mod has applied the Law of supply and demand, but since the player is the only person buying.... Marxist ßastard
The Khajitt would have 6 nipples not 2.You know, I was about to ask why you posted this rant --- but then I happened across this line and all was made clear.
Povuholo
If you steal something, and your not caught(via the guard mod), by anyone, no one misses the items that you walked away with. How is it that the player is the only person buying from the shops? It's still a game, not everything can be added. And what is more important: Dungeons and quests for the player or being able to see an NPC buy an item every once in a while? Why are there no lances in this game, or flails, or whips such as the scourge from "The Passion of the Christ", or Indiana Jones style bullwhips? No longbows or crossbows.Same as above: Not everything can be added. It takes too much time. And flails/whips would have to react to gravity, and to what it hits, etc...If you commit murder and are caught, shouldn't you be executed? Is this the case in every country here in real? No. So that's nothing strange. In the "Dark Ages" you where considered old IF you reached the age of 40..This is not real life. Why is everyone humanoid? wouldn't Argonians lay eggs, The Khajitt would have 6 nipples not 2.Do all orcs look like they're created by the wizards at Blizzard?Just because they look like lizards doesn't mean they are lizards. They are still Argonians, a race created by Bethesda. They don't have to lay eggs or have... 6 nipples? The real vampire was not a vampire at all. late 1300's Transilvania, Romania. Vlad the Impaler. His surname, Dracula, translates to the Dragon. It's a game, not reality, so it doesn't have to be like reality. To summarize it: 1.There are limitations to what the engine can do and there isn't enough time to add everything. Who's mythology are we using here?2.The Elder Scrolls mythology, from Bethesda. It's not the real world, so it doesn't have to be like it.
ninja_lord666
A game is just that: a game. Who wants realism in a game anyway? Look at Halo. That's a popular game. Is it realistic? Not in the least. Great games are defined, not by their amount of realism, but by their amount of fun. That is where I think Bethesda went wrong. They could have made a better game if they didn't care so much about realism. If Oblivion were realistic, You would pretty much have Sims that focused on the inividual rather than the household. I know I wouldn't want that. My point is, great games aren't realistic.
Concilliator
well on the full armor thing i know for a fact that a soldier trained in its use can comfortably manuver and run in full plate armor and fight with much more animation than you would think , Im not sure on the stamina but i know that a knight could fight dismounted for an entire battle -- and travel in such a manner as well -- but enough about that total realism is in fact nothing you ever want in a game I dont want to go take a poo in a video game i do that enough in my life-- I dont want to sex up pixelsI dont care if the automatons in my game are having silly conversations they are little more than propsI dont want to deal with the intricacy of politic or economics in my game (at least not in any real sense because it is just too goddamn much work)-- I would like more stuff in games but that will come when the technology is there-- also while we are bitching about wtf did bethesda have against real voice actors ?-- i hate bullpoo actors lending a pooty voice to a video game--they could have spent the 200k they payed pricey actors on more game development get professional voice actors they do exist and they sound 10 times cooler and are cheaper than bs hollywood the female voice for orcs/nords almost made me kill them all all that said the lore is what makes the elder scrolls series a lasting one and still puts it above most other rpg in that level of depth -- the religiousity and previous game history is all very good for making it feeled fleshed out if you played morrowind/ etc ( morrowinds story was much better written than oblivion but oblivion is still better than most rpg) omg im still waitin on my shivering isles hence im still posting pps i have 6 nipples
ninja_lord666
pps i have 6 nipples...WTF!? Any-hoo, I agree, realism in games isn't good. It makes the game...realistic, and real life sucks.
Povuholo
There should be some realism, like when you attack someone the guards will come to arrest you, and things like weather and blood. But some things don't have to be done, like recoiling when you accidently hit a wall. Because that's just annoying. There should be realism, as long as it doesn't make the game less fun. About graphical realism... Yes, they could've spend a little less time there and more on gameplay.
Abramul
By the way, Argonians DO hatch from eggs. At least, one of the handbills in Leyawiin says they do...
Rhydderch Hael
... The wear of weapons: swords. Reality check. A claymore was used like a baseball bat.If your sword was used for slashing and its now dull, you can still beat the crap out of someone with it.If you think swordfighting is swinging a sharp steel baseball bat around, you'd be surprised the first time some guy does a crook strike while stepping offline in a bout against you. Give the guy a hand (preferably the one that's flopping on the ground in front of you). ...A knight could not walk under his own strength in full plate armor...A modern soldier typically hauls more weight in gear on his back than the 50-60 pounds of thin, flat metal a knight bore evenly distributed over his entire body. blaze234
If we want to talk realism, Most armor knights wore only covered the front portions of thier body (Sort of like steel). Armor that covers most of the body was mostly ceremonial. That's the reason most knights could move easily to an extent. If you tried charging in a full suit of ceremonial armor, you'd trip.
