Is it alright for adults to watch Anime?

Yep, you read it right. Is it alright for older people to watch Anime, or was it made for the younger audience? A friend of mine says that you shouldn't watch 'cartoons' when you get older, as only kids watch it.

But Anime is just so much more than just cartoons. You can't really compare them, but just as my friend says, cartoons are for kids. Or are they?

C'mon, let me hear Your opinion about this.

(If you don't know what Anime is, check this link.)

I don't like Anime, but for cartoons...

Sometimes I watch them. It has to be funny though. I don't like cartoons with an actual story which is all serious and stuff, because it's often too childish. Things like Dexter's Laboratory are okay to me.

I don't sit down in front of the TV in the middle of the day just to watch some cartoons. I usually watch those things before I go to school, if I didn't record anything 'real' I still want to see from the day before.

Edit: I'm 16.

For kids?

Ok, yeah if you're 30 and sitting alone in your parents basement STILL watching DBZ or some other more or less stupidfied series, yeah it's in your best interest to stop and get a life. If you define yourself as an Otaku, or a Japanophile... Yeah, you need to spend some time doing something else, outside, with other people, not related to anime or japan. But if you're an otherwise stable person, with a steady job that doesn't require you to wear a name tag, who actually goes out and experiences some variety, what you watch (as long as it isn't porn) is your own business. Just try to keep the purchasing of products to a minimum, nothing screems depraved loser like a shelf full of anime minitures. If your friend is concerned about an occasional viewing, he obviously doesn't know how fanatic some people are. Take him to a convention, he'll never be critical of you just watching anime again.

In short, it's fine as long as it's a passing interest and you only watch subbed anime. It's a problem if you base your life around it, talk about it constantly, often using japanese words mixed with english (it sounds stupid when you hear them do it, it's the same when they hear us doing it, have more respect for the language), and spend most of your money on it.

Yes, while most anime is geared toward that 8-14 age group, most Americans really aren't able to get some of the concepts till their in college. More to the point, most colleges have anime clubs of some sort, and while most of them are filled with more or less deviant persons, the club itself wouldn't exist if there wasn't something of value there. Now, for your friends argument, yes, watching Anime past age 16 is generally considdered deviant, even in Japan. Due to a number of unspeakable acts commited by anime fanatics, and the general lack of social skills present in your average otaku, it is seen as disruptive to society, and outright unhealthy. While deviance is a bit more acceptable in the states, and there are fewer criminal acts, this view still remains. That said, there are a number of animes which have suitable depth, complexity, and are more enriching than 80% of what the rest of america watches. The only difference is that people who watch standard programs don't usually devote their lives to it, buy merchandise, and fit as many words as they hear into their genral vocabulary. Those that do are just as bad.

The lesson to be learned is how much is too much. Something few people ever figure out.

Well, for someone who actually watches cartoons AND anime, I have to diagree with those of you that think adults shouldn't watch cartoons or anime. In fact, I still watch "Sesame Street" every once in a while (I know it isn't a cartoon, but it definitely is made for children ;) ). And I have to tell you that I somehow managed to retain the kid in me to this day.

Sure yeah, an older person watching reruns of "Sailor Moon" would seem rather odd  , but for me, I don't mind watching certain animated television shows or movies. In fact, I appreciate many anime movies ("Ghost in the Shell" comes to mind 8) ... ) because they're just like like any other decent Hollywood movie: a deep plotline, convincing and emotional characters, and settings and scenarios that are believeable.

Yeah, I know there are some pointless anime shows (can't think of any because I don't watch them  ), but on the whole, anime can sometimes be enjoyable if you can take the time to really understand the concepts some of these TV programs and movies bring about. "Americanized" anime (sorry, my yankee pals, but I don't mean to sound offensive to you especailly ;) ) OTOH is what tends to spoil it for anime in general.

As a closing point, I have to agree with Vagrant, nad to paraphrase, "Moderation is key" ;)

I'm not a fanatic or something like that, I like watching anime on boring evenings, that's all. But I have to agree, some people are really crazy about anime, using japanese words blended with english/swedish. Now THAT'S something I wouldn't try to do in public! Don't want to embarass myself anymore in life.

Oh, and what's the problem with South Park? :P Heck, it's not suited for kids or anyone, but I kind of like it anyway. Don't know why, I just like the sick and demented way they have created it! :D

Nothing's wrong with southpark, occasionally they even get some things right on a deep philosophical level. But technically it's a cartoon, which destroys that whole "cartoons are for kids" idea. Hell, even some things made for kids have some deeper concepts that most children, and often parents miss. Some of this stuff isn't always good, and speaks a bit about the culture that presents it, but it's there if you really stop to think about it.

I know exactly what you mean. When I was a kid I only watch cartoons just for the pictures and all, never listening on what they said. As long as it was cartoons it was fine with me. 8 years later, when I see the programs again, I came to think of just how much I missed, not listening to what they said.

There are some 'cartoons' designed for both adults and children. Take The Simpsons for example. It has a slapstick basic comedy track for kids, and a more subtle 'grown up' one, which hopefully children wouldn't understand!

The Simpsons are funny alright, but I don't like Itchy and Scratchy. Now that's just plain sick. I've seen worse, but it still make my stomach turn.

Anyway, anime can be quite brutal as well. Take 'Elfen Lied' for example. You can't really get anymore brutal, but the series have an incredible story, with a nice little gruesome touch. I sure wouldn't show that to my kids when I get older. :D

Ichy and Scratchy really really reminds me of Tom and Jerry. It's odd, since it was my favorite show when I was a kid, and I didn't even realise how violent it was. When I watch it now, I'm like  !

Simsons is fun, and watching a couple animes from time to time isn't bad. Just make sure you follow Vagrant0's oppinion, and you won't look strange.
