Using the Face Editor after the tutorial

I've heard of a way to get into the face editor after the tutorial part of the game is over. Can anyone tell me how please?

Maybe the construction set? I was wondering a similar thing... I was wondering if you can open saved game characters in the construction set and where would they be located? I would like to take someone else's saved character face and put it on my own, or put it on my companion npc.

An experienced player will make their very first saved game at the point in the sewers just before the character exits into the world. The lighting conditions aren't all that great if you want to rework the face, but it's a quick and easy way to sprout up a brand new character with different birthsigns and class, without having to trudge through the tutorial all over again.

There's also the console command to edit the player's race, but it's fraught with dangers since it may prang your attributes and other stats beyond all hell.

- open console

- type "showracemenu"

- do not close the console!

- make your changes

- end the face editor

- save in a new slot

- quit the game (loading the main menu isn't sufficient)

- load your new save

Following this procedure, I've several time changed the appearance of my char without any problems.

:(

Not only did this method allow me to change the hair colour of my player character it also reset a number of my skill and attribute settings and reset all skill progress bars. Unfortunately, I didn't realise the loss until several hours later. Fortunately, I'd made a full save just before the change.

After some more testing (because I was really hoping such a simple method would work for me), I found that the resets occur even if nothing is changed - probably upon closing the menu. I've not look further into it, but I suspect the resets may partly have to do with my character having a custom class because a few of the attributes actually increased a bit.

Bottom line: Please do a full save and check your stats before and after if you use the above method.

I think you're supposed to save BEFORE you exit the facegen menu.

(A few minutes later)

Yep. From UESP:

WARNING: Using this menu will reset all of your skills to their default initial settings. (If you edit your race, instead of clicking "done" when you are done, leave the race menu open and save your game. When you reload it your race/looks will be changed like you wanted them to be and your skills will not be reset.)

I bow to you my master.

I have called myself a "master' of console

but i had no idea that you could change your looks without changing your stats

i always assumed stats changed. silly me for not trying to save first.

teach me your console genius sir :P

Well i have to say something here. I have tried several times to change various characters with the showracemenu command in the console, because the other way i have just takes too damn long.

But when i use this command and leave the race menu open, i can't save the game. the save option in the pause menu is grayed out and when i try to save the game using the console it just something like 'you cannot save at this time'. Since most of you guys seem to have got it working this way though, is there something i'm missing?
