Porting mods?

Will it be possible for old moders to just take old gun models from NV and re pack them for this game? This game is great but is in despite needs for some more guns in game

If so will we have to wait for the creation kit or is it currently possible?

It is likely that it's possible but it's not allowed.

Why is it not allowed? Im talking about the original creator re uploading or someone re packing after asking the creator first

If you mean porting someones models that they made themselves and made it into a mod it is allowed to be ported because it's their model but you cannot port a model from the game to another game without express permission from the creator, which in this case is Bethesda, and they don't allow it. It doesn't matter if someone used that model for a mod. They are not allowed to make it into a mod in the next game by porting it over. They'll have to make the model from scratch so it looks close to it if they want to make a mod of it for the next game.

If a modder made an asset, then they can port that asset, OR give permission for someone else to port it.

The prohibition on porting is for copyrighted assets from other games and sources. Beth has expressly said this is not allowed. It is widely believed they did this because they do not own the copyright for certain assets themselves, but licensed the right to use that asset in one and only one game from third party programmers. If they allow some one to use a copyrighted asset they do not own, it opens them up to a lawsuit by that third party. Using third party assets in games is very common practice by game makers. It means not having to reinvent the wheel over and over. SpeedTree is one example of a third party company that licenses their work to game companies.

What they are trying to tell you is that it depends on how the mod was created. If the mod author used assets from NV, he will need to convert the mod to use similar assets that are in FO4 if they exist. Or he will need to start over. It looks to me like the mod you are looking at could be using unique meshes and textures that were created by the author, so it should be portable. But I didn't go into it in any detail to see what was made. If he started with NV weapons and just made them look like m16s or whatever, then he probably starts over.

Well, if anyone wants to port my stuff (the Beth parts are explicitly stated in the readme, and typically amount to stuff like gun triggers, magazines, batteries, muzzle flashes, and other easily replaced stuff) and spare me the effort, here's the express and explicit permission to do so. But probably nobody meant my crap anyway :p

  • 1 month later...

Heyho people,

first: sorry for postnecromancy but the question wasn't answered for me.

To make it understandable what i want to ask is:

Am i able to use models (not mods) of, for example, a weapon made for fallout 3, new vegas or skyrim without having to edit the model?

For example: How would i port a fallout 3 custom-made P90 to Fallout 4?

Thanks in advance for any help.
