Originally it was to save memory. Don't render what you can't normally see because it takes up processing power. But with today's engines and average computer specs there really isn't any good reason why more developers shouldn't be doing more immersive 1st person views.

That's part of it but it's mostly just that having a full first person character in the main environment layer is seen as kind of a cheeky move, and doesn't always work out so great because it introduces all kinds of camera clipping issues as well as the character either clipping through the walls or having an ultra bulky collision boundary to prevent that. Most developers just skip over it because it's just not worth the hassle, but for an immersive game like Fallout, Beth really has no excuse.

I'm adding my voice to this request. There are a lot of really good and interesting mods out there already for other aspects of this game, but immersive first person camera (like for Oblivion, Skyrim, FO3, FONV) is my absolute number one on the wish list. Although it may sound funny, I just can't play bethesda games anymore without such a mod... It raises immersion up to the sky.

As long as they make the pivot point (if that's the correct term) in the neck so the head is actually turning and bending forwards and backwards. (With the head turning and the neck bending obviously lol)

Otherwise it's just the camera turning in the middle of the head causing clipping and stuff.

This is a first person mod for Skyrim: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/57859/? - it consists only of two Script Extender files: one .ini and one .dll... But how to open this .dll file and modify it, is beyond me...

You can't open or modify DLL files.

Just like flash files, there are decompilers available that can edit dll files. A search reveals that .NET Reflector with a plugin called "FileGenerator" will do the trick.

Hm, I can't really remember this well, but did characters in Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas turn their heads up and down? The first person mod allowed to do that and there wasn't any clipping, at least nothing of much signifance.

Also, I thought that these first person mods work the way that they turn off the head mesh (or something like that) to avoid any clipping issues... It's like the camera is hanging in the empty space above the character's body.

But maybe you are right, I don't know much about this technical stuff :)
