I am 99% sure this requires the GECK.

When in build mode and looking at a settler, have overlay that reads:

"Settler - Unassigned" or

"Cait - Resources: Food: Tato (2) Corn (1)"

Also goes for objects that NPC's interact with:

"Guard tower - Settler"

"Trader - Nick Valentine"

It is difficult and nearly impossible to know who is assigned to that guard tower or crops on the other side of Sanctuary without it being in line of sight.

Current "solution" to this issue is giving certain hats, armor or outfits to NPC's with certain tasks. Give your guards Army Helmets and combat armor; your traders newsboy hats and trenchcoats, your farmers minuteman hats slacks & tshirt etc.

Let's build on this idea or suggest something that would improve the assignment aspect of settlement building! Thanks for checking this out.

Came to post something like this as well and found a few of you already requesting it. I hope someone picks this up and also allows us to rename them and assign beds etc.

Currently, every settler is dressed identical when I find the items so there's just no way I'll know who's assigned to what bed.

Please someone make this!

One thing you could do is place bells near things you want to assign settlers to and just call them all and then look at them in workship mode. I do agree that having some kind of interface that tracks who is doing what would be enormously useful. I still can't figure how if Cogsworth is doing his assigned jobs or not (harvesting or scavenging) or if I should try to assign him to guard duty or just leave him alone.
