Seems plenty of people are editing these files without issue but all I get is a brown face.

Could someone please share the DDS file format info.

Normally i use DXT5 interpolated alpha (photoshop), but when I load the game my characters face is brown and the textures don't load.

Opening the nude mod that Art of The Body made in TexView2 (a texture viewer originally made for ARMA modding) shows he used DXT3 with RGBA so there's no real difference in the settings your using. Wasn't there an issue with skyrim that caused darker shading for custom textured characters if the facegen data wasn't exported? That might be it but idk. I don't do enough re-texturing to have a solid answer for you. Sorry.

You can not change the face texture's size (1024 to 2048 ect) unless you change ALL the face texture stuff (moles, wrinkles, blemishes ect) as well. At least that is the going theory and my experience.

This seems to be the closest post to the issue I'm having as well. I've tried changing FO4's face tattoos, using both the unpacked original files and the ones that others have successfully edited, to no avail. I edited the alpha, and saved like I have done with every other dds file, but each time I try to preview the new edits I get a darkened face, with no tattoo; and other overlays, like makeup, no longer appear correctly. I'm saving generating mip maps, not changing file size. I've tried saving in both dxt3 and 5...both are fails for me. Is there another setting I should be tweaking. Please, please, please...if anyone is out there who has had the same problem can point me in the right direction I'd be so grateful!!!!

I had this problem too. My exported DDS wasn't 1024x1024!

I didn't realize that GIMP wasn't exporting the entire canvas size, but just the size of the layer I'd been using, which was smaller than 1024x1024.

I fixed it pretty simply by right-clicking the layer and using the Layer to Image Size tool.

Then just export the DDS as usual (using BC3/DXT5 and generating mipmaps).
