New to modding

Hello, I've played Fallout NV on the 360 for quite some time now. I've known of people modding it on the PC as well. I'm the ultimate "noob" to this. But, I've decided to bite the bullet and try to mod the game too.

(Hangup number one) I have a giant question mark on top of my head on how to download/install mods to the game due to my area of expertise being fixing and modifying Muscle Cars instead of games

(Hangup number two). I currently have a OS X operating system.

(Hangup number three)I see that ALL of the mods are for PC. I've seen the overhauls of the terrain that look like it took 15 years to make. Plus, the many face/body mods out there that look so awesome (Type3 looks pretty perfect to me) Kudos to the guy who took the time to make it. For example (A Better Veronica) Along with clothing that looks even better. Like the photos I've seen from many modders, like (Jonas66) Hopefully I spelled that correctly. Along with the weapon mods that I

never thought I'd see in a game (Most from Millenia). For example, The Sawn-off Remington 870 Police model 8 Tactical. And the correct looking MK3 Magnum Research Desert Eagle. "Guns are also a thing I know about"

So, long story short. How do I and what do I need for these mods to work, be cohesive with each other, how to Install, Operating System and the best or non-complicated way to keep them working.

I know it's quite a lot to ask but, hopefully you guys will be able to help me get the basics down before I try to mod The Mojave.

Thank You.

I'm a mac guy myself and the best and easiest way to mod FNV is to Buy a copy of Windows 7 or 8 and do a Bootcamp install of the operating system. The install process is fairly easy once you own the disk.

You would go to Utilities and run the Bootcamp Assistant. Once windows OS is installed you then restart in windows. Install Steam and FNV.

After that you can use NMM and any other native windows application.

Thanks man, That will most certainly help. One more thing, I've seen the videos on Youtube with a graphic overhaul that makes the game weapons, terrain, buildings and some NPC's look like it's a Xbox one/ PS4 gameplay.

what category/file name would most of the Building/Terrain fixes be under? I know where most of the NPC/Character fixes are but, I'd rather not take the chance of downloading the wrong files.

I have a slight feeling I'm going to face palm myself when I hear the answer.

Many people don't realize it, but a MAC is just a PC with fairly decent hardware. It will run Windows just like any other PC. But OSX is much more picky when it comes to hardware and will not run on just any PC - But it will run on many. BootCamp allows you the best of both worlds MAC and PC software will both be able to run on it.

So in so many words, you're saying that Nexus mods will work on this computer, but may be a little bit more difficult to install?

I know you guys are probably tired of trying to explain all this to me but I have two last questions .

1. Is it possible to download Nexus mods to a USB Drive (Memory Stick) and reinstall them to another computer not hooked to the internet?

2. Is "Bootcamp" and "NMM" useable without the internet if transferd by USB?

Don't worry your not being a pain,

They will work on your Mac if you if you get a copy of window and do the bootcamp install. After that you will run the windows system to play your games and installing mods will be no more difficult than installing them on any other PC.

"1. Is it possible to download Nexus mods to a USB Drive (Memory Stick) and reinstall them to another computer not hooked to the internet?"

Yes NMM has an option to install from an archive (Zip, 7z and so on). You will have to have had the computer online to install steam and the games but after that you can set steam to off line mode.

"2. Is "Bootcamp" and "NMM" useable without the internet if transferd by USB?"

Bootcamp is a "Partition" Containing the Windows OS. After doing a Bootcamp install you would have both OS X and Windows systems installed on your computer. You will have the ability to change between operating systems meaning when you wanted to play your games you just restart your computer in windows and your all set.

You can't transfer your bootcamp drive via a USB drive it will be to big and if you could put it on one it wouldn't run very well.

Edit: Just thought of this and I get your not a computer guy so this is the simplest explanation of what a bootcamp install is.

Your taking your one computer and basically turning it into two. You will still have your original Mac that runs OS X but after your do a bootcamp install you'll also have a shiny new PC which will run the games that you want to play. Both computers will still have the same specs and be under the same hood but you can switch between them any time you want.

Thank you so much for the detailed info. It's really gonna help when I get ready to set all this up. My mother is a Graphic Designer to top it off. I

would like to know how you guys got into this field of game design but, I know this isn't the place to ask that.

But thank you for all your help guys, you're more helpful and kind than World of Tanks and Forza Motorsport Forums combined. It's much appreciated.

Just an FYI there are other ways of getting the games to work on your Mac but I don't recommend them.

  1. Parallels, which is a windows emulator. (not sure on price but it's between $50 $100 plus you still need a copy of windows OS) ((which you would need to buy for just a Bootcamp install anyway.))
  2. Cider Wine, Which will allow you to also run the programs but is extremely hard to get working if your not good with computers. (Wine is the only Free Method to install windows Programs on your Mac) ((that I know of))
  3. Crossover, A user friendly version of Wine. ($50 ish program)

I've tried all of these methods and find just doing a Bootcamp install and running windows natively works the best. The others do work but the games tended to lag or have other graphical issues. They also seem to crash a lot more with these methods.

I don't want to get to technical on you so I'm keeping it simple I just wanted you to know that there were other options but again I do recommend just doing a Bootcamp install.

I got into this because FO3 DLC was delayed for the PS3. I was miffed about that but wasn't going to buy an Xbox just to get the DLC on release. I decided I would try to run the game on my Mac because of the DLC. I tried the Wine install again it did work but kind of sucked. Went to Crossover and it did work better but still sucked. My mom got a free copy of Parallels when buying a new IMac and gave it to me because she would never use it and had no clue what it was so I picked up a copy of windows vista to give it a shot. It worked too but was a bit resource intensive and the game was laggy.

I had the window OS so I just went with the Bootcamp install and there was no going back to trying the other methods.

Once that was all working I stumbled across the nexus and learned about modding! I was hooked and put out my first mod, That was the beginning of the end of my social life.

Thank you for all the detailed info. It's really going to help me when I get everything set up. If I could get the "know how" down, I'd have a dream job. I know what you mean by the no social life. I had seizure problems for a long time (gone now). so my life is basically been reset and on hold for idk how long. But I much appreciate everything you've told me.

As another Mac user, I can only reaffirm what chucksteel said. Bootcamp is a good option, just be wary that if functionally halves your computer. Parallels, I've used it, and it is alright. It can seem backwards at times but it can get the job done. As for Wine, oh my goodness, it takes me longer to figure out how to open an exe than to do what I wanted to do with it.

I ended up building my own PC, and so right now this Mac I'm on is just Mac. But Bootcamp would also be my recommended option.
