The trouble with triblys....is that they are in fact trilbys! :pinch:

Don't feel too bad, you are certainly NOT alone!

Oh trust me, I know... It's always the stupid, simple mistakes that trip us up. I'm a programmer... Mistakes like this get me all the time, and I often spend hours debugging until I realize I misspelled something important somewhere...

Hallo there from Germany,

i have just the same problem, to understand how material swap is function. I want to make new clean suits, with different variants. Well i have now the armor records, the AA-records and the material swap records in FO4Edit. What i dont understand is what makes an armor or an AAarmor record to choose the right material swap record. I dont find the connection. When i look at the armor or armor addon records for blue or black suite, i dont see any differences. Where is the pointer to the right material swap records?

Sorry for my bad english, i hope you understand what i mean.

Thanks for the reply - but that doesnt answer how the vanila suit entries of the suit are function. They have material swap records, but all the "Alternate Textures" fields are empty. How does the game differs the vanila entries? And when i add a "Alternate Textures" record, push F2 to get dropdownlist, i didnt get a list of material swap records, but a list of TXST-records.

I ve took a look in to the "Alternate Settlements" ESP. The author of it also uses material swap (and its function). But his records doesnt use "Alternate Textures" records either. There must be something else /another way, that i dont understand.

Taking the Vault 111 Suit - Clean (ID: 000976B7) as an example:

MO2S and MO4S replace the item texture that you see when you drop or inspect the item.

The Armor item is linked to an Armor Addon item here:

The Armor Addon (ID 000976B6) contains a material swap reference for third and first person views:

Looking at the Male Model Material Swap (ID: 000976B1) you see that it specifies the base material (exactly as it is listed in the object NIF) and the swap material.

Be very careful about the paths. You also need to make sure you are pointing to a new BGSM file in your materials folder that points to the desired DDS files in the textures folder.

For example, I'm finishing up a mod that adds 7 unique vault suits, each with different textures and attributes. So my ESP has 7 Armor Addon entries, 7 Armor entries, 7 Material Swap entries, and 7 Constructible Object entries. I also have to include the appropriate BGSM an DDS files to place in the \Data\ folder.

First of all thanks very much for the detailed explanation. That will help others, that google this problem as i ve done. But i knew all this already. When i open the AA armor record in FO4Edit it looks like that:

Now you can understand why i wonder.

But this solved the problem:

Update to the latest version of FO4Edit. Always.

Come on thats unfair. I ve tried so much thinks, waste a lot of hours for that and the solution was so easy. But you are never too old to learn. I didnt notice that there are different versions. I ve used the very early version BEFORE it was posted on Nexus. When it came up to Nexus i saw only the "3.1.3" and didnt realize that there is a "53c716b" behind that.

After updating FO4Edit i am finally see now the difference too. Thanks God, i am not blind, i am just a fool :D:

Thank you both very much again, but hey the detailed explanation will certainly help others too.

PS: But now i have another problem. All my records that are copied from vanila records and edited have no more the original material swap record, but a NULL-reference in that field instead. Must i redone the whole mod? Because its really huge.

when did they go blank? when you copied them or after you upgraded FO4Edit? If you created the copies in the old version of FO4Edit it might not have copied the records over properly, you might need to go through and re-specify the material swap links.

I ve copied them long time ago with the old FO4Edit version. But as there are now material swap entries till now thats not the problem. I will try this out now and put in my own suit variations new entrys. The only question remaining if a NULL-reference in a record-field can cause problems or not in my save games. Well in other armor-addon-records that dont have material swap the field is completely empty. And those with NULL-reference i will replace with own created material-swap records references.
