How NOT To Install Shivering Isles and the 1.2 Patch

Actually, there are two versions of the 1.2 patch. One is for SI and one for just those that have Vanilla. I learned the hard way that if you patch Vanilla with 1.2 then install SI, you can't use the 1.2 patch on SI. THEN i read on their website in fine print that you only need one of the patches, not both. The SI patch will not install and just tries to tell you that the version of Oblivion you have is already patched. The two are not compatible.

So, Install Vanilla, SI, THEN 1.2 patch if you are going to have both installed anyway. If you never intend to use SI, I would guess that would be the only reason to have the Vanilla patch at all, but the patching system can be confusing.

I am having problems installing SI.

I recently bought it, and tried to install it the following day.

But even though it says on the disk (and at several places on the net) that all I have to do is insert the disk and it will install itself, it doesn't; ...or so it seems to me.

So I've tried opening the file to see what's in it, and there are the usual things (a README file as well). But there's no feature that allows me to install it.

I've even tried waiting a day (an ingame day as well as a RL day, as I've also read that one has to do), but to no avail.

Yesterday I installed a mod (Skill Diary), which acted normally (after I found out that I had to put it into the data file).

Now I haven't tried playing the game after this install, but have been reading up on stuff instead, feeling I better get as well prepared as I can.

Sadly I'm hopelessly computer illiterate, which means there's a lot I don't understand because I don't know what the terms and abbreviations mean or refer to.

Still ... would someone point me to where I can read how to actually get this expansion (Shivering Isles) installed or make a short description of how to do so here (it's the PC version)?

- Also, the 1.2 patch ... is that something I'll need to install too, or will it be installed with Shivering Isles (that's what it said somewhere, but I think I better ask to be sure).

.......

Thanks in advance!

Interesting...

Here's the order I did it in (before reading this):

1. Vanilla, then

2. Vanilla v1.2.0416 Patch, then

3. SI

Then I checked and saw that my version was the same as the SI patch (v1.2.0416), so I didn't even try to install it.

Next I installed the Unofficial SI patch and then added a bunch of SI plugins for mods I had installed previously...

Now I see this thread (haven't fired Oblivion back up yet), and it's got me worried.

Couple of questions:

As it stands, is my Oblivion gonna blow up?

When Bethesda says "you only need one of the patches, not both", based on my install order (above), does that mean that I do NOT need the 1.2 SI patch (b/c I already installed the Vanilla 1.2 patch before installing SI)?

Thanks in advance. :thanks:
