conflicting mods

I have several mods installed that OMOD says have conflicts. I unchecked most of the ones that seem to have the most conflicts. My question is do I have to uninstall all the mods that conflict or will just deselecting them be OK. If I have to unintstall them I might have to wipe out my oblivion folder and start totally from scatch since When I started to use mods I went a little crazy and installed a lot of mods in a very short span of time. In less than a month I think I installed almost 50 mods. When I finally installed OMOD and did a conflict test, I got lots of major conflicts(red). Or is there a utility out there that can merge mods so that I don't need to wipe out my files. Thanks.

P.S. I hope I posted this in the right category.

First, major conflicts are never a good thing. They mean that 2 or more mods are affecting the same things. As you can't have two seperate changes to a single thing, the game uses the version in the file loaded latest to override the file loaded first. Usually this will cause a mod not to work properly, or just crash the game. Installing a mod that affects the same things as another mod should be avoided, especially mods that affect interiors/exteriors, leveled lists, NPCs, or anything that is used within scripting. That said, you can occasionally have major conflicts, but not have any problems because of loading order and knowing what the mod does. Basically the areas in the later mod that affect the same parts of the earlier mod will be given priority, if those parts aren't tied to anything important in the earlier mod, overwriting them wth the later mod.

For instance, 2 mods that affect the same weapons, "A" just has the weapons with the stats you want, "B" has stats you don't want, but has other weapons in the mod that you do want. If you have B load after A you will get conflicts but not see any evidence that A is even active since the information is being overwritten by B. If you load A after B you'll still have conflicts, but will have both the stats of A and the other stuff included in B.

It's a little confusing, and requires you to have some idea about what the mod does and doesn't affect. Generally though, you should avoid having 2 mods active that affect the same thing. Or in the case of mesh/texture replacements, even installing more than one. Mesh/texture replacements aren't .esp based but based in data files which may require that .esp to make everything work correctly. Installing more than one that affect the same things will create problems as to what files are overwritten with what, and how they're used in game.

You definitely have to be careful with mesh/texture replacement - I'm going to have to reinstall my OOO armor mesh replacer after I add the latest version of OOO, since the meshes will be overwritten again. Not a big problem since I keep a zipped copy, but the sort of thing you want to be aware of.

Most of the conflicts seem to be generated by the same mods. for example sigil stone fuser mod has several versions, you only check one, but OMOD detects them as conflicting and unlimited amulets and rings seems to conflict each other even though they are from the same mod. For other conflicting mods is it better to leave them installed or to completely delete them from my data files?

Depends. Do they just show up conflicted, or actually cause problems in the game? Backup your savegames and test them. I'm using all kinds of mods that "conflict" with each other and have been for about eight months now.

If they are inactive, and don't add anything else other than the .esp, then you can usually ignore their conflicts. As long as they aren't activated, they shouldn't cause any problems. You should be able to exclude inactive mods within the conflict report. As long as they aren't part of an OMOD, you should be able to just delete the inactive ones as long as they aren't active, havn't been active, add no additional files, and your game runs fine without them being active. (hell of a qualifier huh?)
