I really do now and I want to mod it like I had years ago. I've been following the step-project guide and I have actually cut back a lot. I have an Phenom II X6 running all six cores at 3.7GHz, 8GB RAM and a new AMD R9 390 with 8GB of VRAM (it would be great to load all of Oblivion's textures in there now wouldn't it). Regardless, I know even with all that power, Oblivion is an older game and won't be able to use the newer technologies. I'm using Wrye Bash and I did switch to Qarl's Redimized to save power but it actually didn't seem to make much difference. If I remove UL, I get 45 FPS walking the same path. What could be causing this? Could it be hardware related? I've read post of people using far more mods, and I can't imagine them getting this big of a hit. (I just got the R9 390, I hope it's not because of that and I should have gone for the Nvidia GTX 970) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Surilindur Posted December 10, 2015 Share Posted December 10, 2015 (edited) I do not think it is hardware-related. The game is so old, and indeed cannot use everything available. I do not use Unique Landscapes myself and I get somewhere around 15-40 FPS (capped at 40), usually around 15-30 FPS in exteriors. With RAEVWD, that is, and things like Oblivion Reloaded and OSR. But I have an R9 290 (an Asus one), and when I upgraded from my old ATI Radeon HD 5570, I did not really notice any difference in FPS when playing Oblivion. And I mean really, just that I could stuff more textures in because of the vram, but it had no effect on FPS whatsoever. Maybe a couple of frames, but not more. Totally worth it. :facepalm: I think the game is just so overly limited. Especially since every other game I have now runs maxed out no problems (at least on the graphics card's part, my older processor chokes on all new games way before the card does). Assassin's Creed Rogue, for example, now works as smooth as butter (excluding the huge battles when boarding a French Man-O-War, when I think it is because of my 2nd gen i3 processor) with every setting maxed out. Even Skyrim stuffed with mods runs better, though the engine is still a limit there, as well. It always is in Bethesda games, they have used the same engine since Morrowind, just overhauled it after every game. :tongue: I do not know about Nvidia cards, though, I must admit I have not had an Nvidia graphics card for years. Especially since the equivalent (approximately, according to all benchmarks) Nvidia cards cost a lot more here, like 30-50% more, which I find ridicilous. So I do not consider myself an "AMD fanboy", just someone who objects to spending more than he has to. I even prefer Intel processors - AMD makes good graphics cards, but I think I get more value for my "processor money" from Intel (to put it mildly). But yeah I did notice that my Ob still likes to slow down in certain areas/directions when all my settings are maxed out and I have mods like QTPR, RAEVWD, Better Cities, and UL and tools like memory patch. I think Phillipe is right, the game is just too old despite many work arounds. It's like trying to retrain an old nag to be a champion runner again - it's just not going to happen on that level. Part of that is the game engine limitation. Amazing how game companies tend to put out flawed products for money, but when fans get involved and do it for free and out of love they do it right. discovery1 Posted December 12, 2015 Share Posted December 12, 2015 raevwd will kill most pcs. the biggest problem with oblivion is distant objects as far as fps is concerned. I have a NVidia 980 ti and it still struggles. however oblivion reloaded has a ram disc option which does really work, but you have to refresh the ram every time you reboot your pc. the best workaround is to invest in a ram flash drive which retains the flash memory. its the only real option with a game that can only use 1 core of memory despite all the settings in nvida ge force and amds catalyst control panel. GiSWiG Posted December 18, 2015 Author Share Posted December 18, 2015 I've gotten it much better now. I found that the Diverse Waterlife of MMM was a big factor. I think it was also using some of the Oblivion.ini settings that were part of the guide that was killing my performance. After reseting the INI sticking to the non-graphic related recommendations of the guide, and adding one other setting, things are working pretty good. That one setting is the uGridsToLoad, by default it is set to 5 but I set it to 9. Now from the initial sewer exit, I can see large rocks and structures across the lake. It is a nice balance between being able to see father and performance loss. I kind think its like RAEVWD but it will be based off the structures that are in my world like UL and Roads of Cyrodil. I wanted at least QTP3 and Bomret's SI Texture packs along with Improved Trees and Flora. Robert's body replacers with Oblivion Character Overhaul, AWLS, Weather All Natrual, and sound mods. I have the list below. So with everything, I sometimes drop down below 30fps but I mostly hover in the upper 30s. I went up a mountain and ran down it while looking at the city and I was in the mid 30s. Looking straight as I run through the forest was around the low 40s. I've still got some more tweaking to do (don't we all) but so far so good.
