Eojinlim
I've played DiabloII and WoW and was pleasently surprised that Oblivion provided a change of pace (and better graphics). However, what I can't get my head around is the spells. Usually after every level up you are entitled to pick spells for which you want to use but in Oblivion, that just doesn't seem to be the case. Is the only thing that happens after reaching a certain stage (like journeyman or master) an ability to cast certain level skills? Don't you get access to new spells and stuff or is the only way to learn new spells through training from NPC characters? I'm currently at level 4 and a little frustrated that I can only use the firebolt or whatever it's called and the headling spell. I want to get to use new spells... Please help because this game is starting to get boring for me already.
Abramul
For the most part, you can only get spells by perchasing them from a spell merchant. List of spell merchantsList of spells, by effect, including information on who sells each spell I wouldn't be surprised if someone's made a mod that lets you pick spells when you level up. ProcrastShadow
If you chose a school of magic for any of your major skills, you would've learned a few new spells for that school. For example; having destruction as a major will instantly give you about four or five destruction spells. Once you gain access to the Arcane University, you can craft your own spells as long as you can cast what you create and have enough money to make it. You also need to know the effects of the spell beforehand. So if you wanted to make a spell that would cause fire and shock damage, you would already have to know a spell that causes fire damage and a spell that causes shock damage. So as mentioned before, you'll have to buy spells from npc's or make your own at the Arcane University. Or you can buy the official Spell Tomes Plugin, but I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't be suprised if someone else has made something similar.
Eojinlim
Oh, thanks for all the feedback. Although I wish you could gain new spells automatically, I guess it's better than nothing that you can make your own spells. However, I have another question. As a first time Oblivion player, how did you guys start off? I don't know half of what's going on, aside from the things taught in the dungeons tutorial. Did you guys just go out there and try to finish the main quest or did you just roam around and learn as you went? Rhydderch Hael
From one D2 spelunker to another— going through the main quest the first time will teach you a few things about the game world in general, but you don't have to rush through. One of my characters waited over three months (in game time) before embarking on the main quest, and was none the worse for it. Believe you me, the folks who were waiting for my arrival didn't say a word of complaint (its not like I was delivering pizza). Enjoy the scenery. The city of Anvil may subtly remind you of Lut Gholien, but Bruma makes for a fine Harrogath, that's for sure. And the small settlement of Hackdirt bears a strong resemblence to Tristram— after the razing. But whatever you do, dive into the holes. Cut your teeth on nameless mobs before trying your hand at the big quests. Kill things, get stuff, level-up. That's nothing strange or unusual for us, no?... As a first time Oblivion player, how did you guys start off? I don't know half of what's going on, aside from the things taught in the dungeons tutorial.I know what you mean. The first time I played the game, my character took these long detours on the roads to avoid getting anywhere near these sinister-looking horsemen carrying torches in the night. Thought they might be in league with the assassins, or maybe even be these daedra I've heard about who may have already entered the mortal world. Dove into the nearest roadside inn for shelter and safety— and ran straight into one of these very same guys drinking ale at the bar. Imperial Legion road patrols. Fancy that. Imagine the visage of my fears turning around and saying "Greetings, citizen. How may I be of service?"
Ginji
I loved Diablo 2, we had a small LAN party at the youth club I used to go to, 'twas brilliant. If you make spells remember this; Weakness to X 100% is your friend, you can use it to (cheaply) double your damage (i.e. Weakness to Fire 100% + Fire damage 20pts on touch/target = Fire damage 40pts).
