Vresiberba
Change your key bindings? Well, uhm, Skyrim uses hard bound keys so I can't. Anyway, 'ACTIVATE', which I have bound to 'X' pick up books, apparently. So, solved.
IsharaMeradin
You can change key bindings from within the game menu. What may be 'hard coded' is the text that tells you what to click to interact with things. It always goes with what you change it to even if the display text is different. By default 'E' is 'Activate' so if you changed it to 'X' then you use 'X' to 'Activate'
bben46
I immediately changed my activate to space and E to jump as that is how I set up all of my games. Beth, in their infinite wisdom, made Skyrim for PC as close to the console controllers as they could. With the insane idea that the PC experience should be exactly the same as the console experience. Using the same half dozen keys for multiple things and ignoring the rest. Forgetting that we have a minimum of 102 base keys and at least 3 modifier keys giving us a minimum of 408 possible keys - then we also have mouse keys - my mouse has 6 built in buttons plus a scroll wheel. (Not an expensive gaming mouse) All can be re-defined if you know how. I use a program called. AutoHotKey - it's free and available here: http://ahkscript.org/

No. Some keys are hard coded and can not be changed. It's the same in basically all Bethesda games, including Fallout 4.
