... Before buying the Cheydinhal house, I saved the game and took a look at the layout. It was OK, but I didn't like the way the crates, barrels and boxes were stacked at the top of the stairs. Too messy looking. Those should be in a basement or back room. ...

The article on the Cheydinhal house at UESP.net says that the 'clutter' is actually a plus: the house is characterized by a high density of containers against floor space, perfect for the pack rats of Tamriel. Kitchen, storage and wardrobe are all close to each other, meaning you can access weapons, armor, clothing, artifacts and alchemical ingredients without having to walk a ways (or worse yet, enter a new cell such as a basement or bedroom suite). I tend to agree with that assessment.

I think Bravil is a dump. I broke into the house for sale there and found it drab and cramped. Since I had a hovel already in IC, I didn't need another one.

Question: Does buying the upgrades for the Bravil house make it nicer and brighter inside? I didn't own it when I toured around inside.

Upgrading a dump still leaves you with a dump, and Bravil is not that well improved after it's fully upgraded.

Yes, the Bravil house does become much much nicer when bought. I would suggest buying it, just because, its a free bed to sleep on.

Well, I have free beds in both the fighter's Guild and the Mage's Guild.

I read that too, but I just didn't like the aesthetics of the jumbled-up crates and barrels right at the top of the stairs.

Well, you can always opt not to purchase the House Storage Area and leave that section blank. Not neccessarily blank, though: mods, the addition of a 'butler' in CS, or simply park your Adoring Fan, Mage Apprentice, or DB lackey there and have them greet you at the head of the stairs.

If you have a mild obsession with 'completing' quests or cannot get past the idea that you've left that one house upgrade behind at Borba's store, you can exploit a particularly nasty bug: purchase the Storage Area upgrade then, without leaving the merchandise window, give back that upgrade form to Borba for 0 gold. You would have "purchased" the upgrade and completed the quest, but that particular upgrade will never actually show up in your house.

Learned that the hard way when trying to upgrade a home one time. You don't need to keep the Upgrade letters in your inventory to receive the furniture, but you better damn well hold onto those forms long enough for the game world to apply those upgrades in the first place!

How exactly did you break in? You need a key right? Or did you just you the unlock cheat thingy? I quite like the Bravil house. Yes it is a cramped, dirty, freaky place but its a place to call home.

Bruma is still my favourite and the house is cosy and also comes in very usefull when you have to spend all the time near there in the Main Quest.

I used the Unlock console command to get inside. I figured I'm a top level cat burgler, so no lock should be able to stop me, right? ;)

My favourite town is a tie between Bruma and Skingrad.

The Bruma house just has that cozy, warm home feeling. It's large enough for you to go on a decent walk, but small enough that you don't have to run everywhere to see everything. The residents are cheery, and apart from a reclusive Wood Elf, seem happy to talk.

Skingrad has a fun 'not quite city, more than suburb' feel which makes for fun sneaking and stealing. Being as it's a circular path, walking the streets isn't very interesting, but the backyards and alleyways make the aforementioned sneaking much more satisfying. The house is great for display freaks, but having three cells to traverse to get to loot storage and then to the display areas is a little tedious.

I've got to go with Cheydenhal, and Anvil close runner up. My two favorite towns in Cyradil.

Skingrad sucks, at least for me, and I'll tell you why: it's so inconvenient, I kept getting lost going around the damn corner.

(On the other hand if I didn't have those map markers I'd never make it out of a simple dungeon!)
