Game randomly minimizes

Hi all.

I haven't seen the issue I have posted anywhere but hopefully someone can help.

I'll be playing along nicely then the game will suddenly minimize. It doesn't crash so when I click on the icon in the quick launch bar it comes back on the pause/save menu and I can continue as before. Where I am and what I'm doing in the game doesn't seem to matter. It's happened mid-combat, in workbenches or just wandering around and in high/low load areas.

I thought it might be because I tend to watch vids/listen to music while I'm playing with the other thing on my second monitor but I've tried without anything else running and it makes no difference. I've also exempted my games drive from being scanned by AVG in case that was it but no joy. I'm running the game well within my rig's capabilities so I don't think it's that either. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Specs:

Intel i5-2500k CPU @ 3.30ghz 3.30ghz

16gig Ram

Nvidia GTX 970 4gig vram

Mods:

Simple Intersection.esp
BetterSettlers.esp
CraftableAmmo.esp
CraftableAmmo_plus.esp
EferasShoulderBag.esp
SettlerRenaming.esp
Billyro Curie.esp
I've got a couple of texture mods as well but I don't think they can be the issue.

Mods don't generally cause this kind of problem.

First guess, you have some background process that is stealing focus. Some processes don't really close when you close them :pinch:

Some messenger programs just go into a kind of listing mode, then every once in a while check for new messages. Some have a game mode that you can activate to keep them from calling home.

Personal experience - Some years ago playing Oblivion on a weak 32 bit WinXP system. At exactly every 10 minutes the game would first freeze, then CTD.

Several weeks of looking found a HP driver for an old HP printer that I no longer even had was calling home to check for updates. HP had changed the URL where the updates were located and the one that was being called was dead. The stupid driver called, Crashed the game, no connection. Then waited ten minutes and called again. Repeat. After I removed that old driver I had very few crashes even on that weak system.

Suggestion: take out the trash. I use CCleaner to remove a lot of junk that likes to stay in background for no real reason.

I did use Loot but, as bben46 said, I don't think it's a mod issue. Using CCcleaner has helped but not completely eliminated the issue. It only happens once or twice a session now and I can kind of live with that until I find out exactly what is causing it.

When it happens, note the time, location in game and what you were doing at that moment. Then go right back into the game - if after about 4 or 5 crashes you start to see a pattern. This will give you a starting point to use for troubleshooting.
