tomomi1922
I am able to open DDS file and edit them in Photoshop. But when it comes to saving, which option do I pick? There is a barrage of options ... Which version does Fallout 4 take?
lilkandeekid
DDS againhttps://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-texture-tools-adobe-photoshop Edited January 11, 2016 by lilkandeekid
tomomi1922
DDS againhttps://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-texture-tools-adobe-photoshopI don't mean to be rude but ... you read the word "DDS" and you wrote me off as nagging for a way to open DDS. But if you read, I said I was able to open with Photoshop, which means I already know about nVidia Plugin. The problem is, each and every game expects its DDS files differently. Skyrim is different, some other games are different. Thus I want to know how Fallout 4 like to take it. And you threw me a generic "DDS again" link. Thanks for nothing. lilkandeekid
Sorry, but theres other ways to convert a dds to a readable format then the nvidia plugin so specifics can go along way....Ive always follwed - basic setting from default profile: enable mipmaps, set to all, DXT1 for all things not requiring an alpha channel, and DXT5 for all things that doPretty straight forward and had no issues so far. BlandSauce
I don't know how the options are layed out in Photoshop; I'm using GIMP, but I'll give you my settings there.Going off advice I found in an old thread (I think it was for Skyrim), for compression, I've been using either "BC1 / DXT1", "BC3 / DXT3", or "BC3 / DXT5"The main difference between those is on the alpha channel. If you're either not using alpha, or it's something that can have hard edges, use "BC1 / DXT1". The other two are increasing quality, but also, increasing file size.Other compressions might work, but I haven't tried any others except "None".I also have it generate mipmaps with default settings. Not sure if they're required, but all the default assets have them.EDIT: I took too long to type.
tomomi1922
I did a bit of research and found this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ8Ghfoj6-Q Basically the answer is:DXT5 ARGB 8bpp | Interporlated alpha2D texture, Generate MIP Map This is the right setting to save your DDS in. I tried it, it worked. Of course, I haven't touched Alpha and Bump map yet. I am still new at this. Well Photoshop or GIMP, it should be the same (presume you know how you use your image editor), because the saving process is part of nVidia plugin. @lilkandeekid, sorry I sounded harsh, but you said nothing but threw me a link. And I met way too many people (both online and in real life) who listen only to the buzz words and formulate their understanding. If I was wrong about you, I am sorry. My other experience back in the day of Skyrim was .... I saved the wrong format and Skyrim came out all crazy. I did even heavier modding with The Sims 2 and The Sims 3. And the problem with Sims is .... the game will take .... 15-30 minutes to load. I kid you not. My last play I was able to keep load time from 10-12 minutes (by putting the game and all the mods on SSD). I thought I was odd. But when I asked others on forums, they all reported back .... 15-30, sometimes 50 minutes are normal. Yep, you come home from work, start TS3, go take a shower, have dinner, and game is ready to play. And unlike Fallout 4 or other Bethesa game, TS3 can lock up and crash at any given moment. And that is NORMAL. So playing in that kind of condition, we cannot afford to do extensive "trial and error" run. Sometimes it is possible to load the game with just that 1 mod to test (a skin mod, or clothes mod), the game still takes 5 minutes to load. Unlike Fallout 4 that takes a total of 30 seconds to load, with all my 168 plugins.
lilkandeekid
No worries man. Some thoughts, if you're not editing alpha's may want to go down to DXT1 (saves files space which can get hefty). Also, I use Nifskope to save alot of time. If you leave it open it will update when you save your DDS so you can see results instantly instead of loading FO4.

I have so much to do in real life (not an 8-5 job kind of person). So I treat the game as ... the game. Not work. But the perfectionist in me kicks in and I learn a bit here and there for necessity. So if everything is perfect the way it is, I do not need to even come down this route. But I guess that didn't happen, and here we are again. Although I would say I am more incline to modding (like creating a standalone .esp) just because I got a good start with FO4. And this game loads the fastest (comparing to Skyrim, to Mass Effect 2, 3) and I barely played FO3 or NV. So far Nifskope only shows me the all white bodyshape when I open individual outfits. Not sure why it doesn't load the default texture. You know what, I will listen to you and try DXT1, what is it going to hurt? FO4 loads so fast anyway. lilkandeekid
Nifskope probably doesnt know where the textures are at, Options > Settings > Resources and adding the folder(s) where things are at should fix it. tomomi1922
My god, its impossible to find my old thread. Anyway, lilkandeekid, since you mentioned, what are some good advice on creating some Normal map so I can make some small bumps and scratches more "3D" instead of a "body paint" version? If you don't mind showing me, thank you in advance. And yes, I am quite happy with what I did: I used the "Dirty" DDS from Glorious CBBE nude mod ... it's way too dirty. I went into Photoshop to mix the clean and the dirty version to make the dirt lighter (which means less dirt), and enhance the nipple while at it. Easy peasy. My only complaint is the pubic hair is not dark enough. My character has black hair, yet her pubic hair is rather brownish. In Photoshop, the value is already at 000000 (true black) but in game the black is not quite there yet. Now, to make things more interesting, I want to make all those dirt to give some texture.... as part of learning now to mod :)
