How to locate specific textures?

I want to remove rust from some items, and make some glossy like institute walls, that were made available to be placed through alternate settlements, which I know will change them in other areas but that's whatever. How do I search for furniture/flooring under textures? Can anyone also recommend me a good program to do this with, other than MS Paint?

I'm just a newbie myself, but this guide should get you started http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/7480/?

Mind you it's very basic, but it gives you information on what program you need to access the texture files, the plugin you need (mind you I have no idea what you need if you decide to use GIMP since I use Photoshop myself, but you're going to need something robust that can be made to handle .DDS files and save them in the correct manner)... as for searching for textures? They're generally sorted into various subfolders that makes some sort of sense (armor goes in armor, clothing in clothing, landscape in landscape, and so on... except for some... peculiar exceptions), but they're spread out in what? 9 .ba2 files... I'd suggest also getting yourself some sort of thumbnail viewer for .dds files so once you have the files you need extracted you won't have to load them all into photoshop/gimp to find the one you're looking for.

Mind you, textures that were added/changed by mods you've installed will be in a loose Texture folder in your Fallout 4\Data folder, but the folder structure will be identical, you just won't have to extract them yourself.

I hope that made some sort of sense, it's 5am and I'm rapidly running out of caffeine...

Ok, I have been scouring all the texture files in the BAE but I can't find: Pool bottom floor and the whole kitchen sets.

Found kitchen items under "Textures1/SetDressing/PlayerHouse_Ruin" for anyone interested, still need that pool bottom :/

I am not experienced with modding and this may be complete hogwash;

This method is what I would have used for Skyrim but now we have

BGSMs handling materials, it will be obvious to anyone who knows

about modding that I am a layman in all of this...

hopefully someone more knowledgeable can call me out if I'm completely wrong.

If anything, at least some of this might teach you something or lead you to good

terms to search for in tutorials / articles / the web.

Maybe there's an easier way to get what you want.

The method which immediately occurs to me, and may even be wrong, is:

Find the object in question in fallout4.esm using FO4Edit

CTRL+Click on the part in brackets [sTAT:xxxxxx] to jump to that FormID

See the mesh for the object

this is as far as I got, I was getting header read errors trying to open FO4 .nifs

with Nifskope alpha 20140710 - not interested enough at the moment to dig any further

What I planned to do next was:

[/line]

Open this mesh in nifskope, see which textures it is using?

Something dealing with BGSM / materials files?

I hoped to take this opportunity to learn a bit about FO4 models and textures but will have to wait for another day.

If none of this makes any sense to you then google for the terms I used.

I'm certain that there are tutorials/articles/forum posts with the information and help you need.

Good luck.
