Wizard, the unfortunate problem in my opinion is that there are enough real bad guys. And when there are not, there are people around to spread fear and distrust. So even, if the purveyors of the merchandise in question are innocent of anything more than trying to make a buck; their advertising tactics are designed to foment said fear and distrust and to further the cause of those who might have more ulterior motives.

Ulterior motives, without a doubt.

Yeah, there are real bad guys in the world. But...Kentucky? And I mean no offense to any Kentuckians, but...Kentucky?http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/biggrin.gif What in the Pit could possibly be going on in Kentucky? Terrorism-wise, I mean. Great boonies, that place's got enough guns in good ol' American hands to stave off a Commie invasion. http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/yes.gif

Wizard (may I call you that?) You've made my point for me with your last sentence. If the advertising tactics succeed in nothing more than fomenting fear and distrust in a community that's "got enough guns to stave off a Commie invasion", and someone starts getting suspicious and wonders what's going on with someone else and starts thinking it is his "civic duty", well you take it from there. Now I'm not suggesting that this will happen or is even likely to happen. It is only one possible scenario. But why do we need to go around telling people that they need to be watching their neighbors' behavior. Come on! Read what Silver said above. It is so true. This kind of stuff can just get out of hand in a heartbeat. That is all I am trying to say here.

And THAT is reason enough to have a Janet Reno style ATF informant lurking behind every hickory stump. I don't think the app is about reporting terrorists, I think it is about getting Americans to report other Americans.

And Harbringe also has it right. When government types start recruiting their own forces it spells the beginning of the end for all of us, even the uber liberals who voted them into office. Next, school kids will be taught they are smarter than their parents....OH! That's already happening.

Velcome to zhe Several States of Amerika.

Yeah, I agree. I hope it's as simple as drumming up some money (as in homeland security money), but it seems too Orwellian overall as it has no actual practical usage (no *good* practical usage, of course).

It is sometimes the combination of many little things that makes such Ah "Harmless" Stuff like an report app, or a country in financial dire straits, or owning more weapons in country than outside of it as well as having 3 times as manly weapons than population, or .,i could continue the list for each countries here. But let us view in the glorious future of Americans city suburbs in about 20 years and you might over hear in 20 years such a conversation sitting on the veranda and wouldn't mind it a bit.

Neighbours son : "Dad, I have a date later, can I borrow the tank?

Neighbours dad: "Sure but be back at 10:00PM you have school tomorrow. Oh and stay protected take the one with the 40mm calibre!"

Need i say more..

For those that are interested what may happens if you go too far... I endorse either in reading the book or watching the movie based on the same book "The Wave" from Todd Strasser. for those who know it already ..it cant be wrong to review either the book or the movie...

As well as reading up the Milligram experiment too. You might get the notion that George Orwell was rather an optimist as he wrote "1984"

Like I stated at the start of this post it is always a combination of many little things you have to take into account when dealing with problems or "mostly harmless" governmental Apps.

What really transpires in a conversation 20 years from now:

"I'm going to a Party Rally. Don't wait up." , the son announces.

The parents wisely say nothing, avoid making eye contact or showing any displeasure. Interfering would result in their beloved son reporting them to the State Police.

America is slipping deeper and deeper into a Western European style Socialist 'Democracy'. At the rate things are going in 20 years the Constitution and everything it promises will be abandoned. As it stands right now, politicians seek ways of circumventing the Constitution, not upholding it. The oath they all swear when taking office is meaningless. In two decades it will probably be against the law to own a copy of it, much less believe in its virtues. This stupid phone app is one more indicator of things to come.

AND checking out '1984' from any public library in the U.S. will set off flags and get the prospective reader's name placed on a government watch list. Isn't that nice?

This vid speaks mountains to what this thread is about and yes some of you may have issue's with the speakers views on certain things but try to get by that and see the patterns she is talking about and see that left - right doesn't matter its all the same when it comes to these sorts of things .Also take note of her Number 4 means , then look at the tittle of the thread.
