Best Modeling Tools

Recommended Posts

I'm currently using a combination of: Blender 2.49b, Nifskope, Paint.NET, and GIMP. I am very new to modding and modeling. I would like to ask any seasoned modders and modelers for their advice. What tools should I be using? Should I buy some other software that will be useful for Fallout and future games? Has nif scripts updated for the new Blender yet? Are there any guides I should be reading/watching?

Thank you for any help you have to offer. Please feel free to pm me if you would rather talk outside of this thread. Thanks again!

Well I've been modeling for several years and I find 3ds Max is by far the best tool. Its also one of the most expensive (Unless you are a student, then its free)

max is the software Bethesda/Obsidian used to make the game's models in the first place. (The niftools exporter is only compatible up to Max 2010)

Also a good place to get textures and some very good texturing tutorials:

www.cgtextures.com

As for tutorials you can find some around here but for learning basic modeling just do a search with Google.

I also use 3DS Max I have a 64bit os so use the 64bit 3DS Max 2011 and a nice person has made a niftools set for that. If you use the 32bit one you need to get a previous version of Max for the nif tools to work. Before the 64bit tools were made I used the nif tools for Max 9, I just hd to export a 3DS file from Max 2011 then import to Max 9.

You know...when you get dressed up real fancy...just kidding XD

Modeling is making your own meshes and textures for things such as weapons, armor, hairstyles,...pretty much anything in fallout.

Modelling is taking a 2d image and using a 3D modelling software package to create a 3D game object or person. All the stuff you see and interact with in game has been modelled by someone if it is a person it has also been rigged and boned then animated.

I'll give my 2 cents in.

I've used Photoshop CS4/5 for several years now (used CS2 before for around 4 years) since my school has a special offer of only $100-$200 per one; I'd have to say, if you're texturing, Photohop (not the Elements version) is the way to go.

I used both 3DS Max 2010 (at school, not at home) and Blender, and I find Blender to be more comfortable and simple, but then again, that's just my tastes. Either can be used to create very high-quality models.
