I've learned alot of the contruction set. I've learned how to use the render map and how to create my own cells and stuff. But, I'm planning on making a mod and.... heres the stupid question... How do i make things? Is there some sort of program? or is it that you need textures and meshes? I have no clue, i want to make a certain mod, and i want to make a new weapon. If you guys can help me oput EVEN IF ITS A STUPID QUESTION that would be GREAT!

You need a few programs to do this.

BSAUnpacker to get relevant base files out of the oblivion bsa's.

Nifskope to change the textures of any specific model.

Any rasta type imaging program. May I recomend Photoshop, or paint shop pro.

And finally, a 3D modeling program. I can't help you there, i'm sure someone else can though.

just google 'em.

3d Studio Max and Blender are your choices. 3dsmax is the professional software, capable of doing pretty much anything you could imagine... but with a huge price tag. So if piracy wasn't so common (and don't ask where to get it, we all know 99% of the Oblivion community didn't pay for their copy, but it's still illegal and a banned subject on this forum... besides, if you can't figure out how to pirate software yourself, 3d modelling is probably too hard for you anyway), your realistic option would be Blender (price tag: $free). It's more limited in what it can do, but probably good enough for anything Oblivion will support. The big differences are in personal preference, and if you want the extra power for future non-Oblivion work.

Just keep in mind this is not easy stuff. Expect to invest a lot of time and effort into learning how to model/texture before you have any results worth publishing.

I tried a bit of modelling for the freespace SCP a while ago and had a poke around quite a lot of different free packages.

Blender is without doubt the best FREE modeller out there, but it is very complex and difficult to get into.

On the other hand, Wings3D is very good and quite easy to start with. Don't be put of by it's origins as a flight sim modding tool. The interface is very intuitive and, as a bonus, the UV unwrapper is quite powerful too. Some good results are possible, even when doing organic models.

~~WARNING~~ If you are using any of the nVidia 9x.xx drivers for XP, Wings won't run properly (some problem with OpenGL).

Good luck and I hope that your skills match your enthusiasm (unlike myself, I suck at modelling :( )

If you are apt at programming and scripting, you could in fact build your meshes in Nifscope (this is what I do). It is however very archaic, and I dont recommend this if you aren't so good with math, angles, or 3d dimensions.

You guys ROCK! I might need alot of practise and patience (which i don't have) but this helps alot... Just as long as I can keep it up. I just bought this Dark MEssiah game and have been playing on it forever! I'm done with it now. Just beat the game :glare: anyway Its real good, If only it was a little more like Oblivion it would be even more awesome. Thanks!

P.S. I really just wanna choose either Blender or that Wings3D. I just wanna know which one brings out the best possible look for my Mod.

I just want to know what kind of math... Cause I'm not the calculus type. But i am good at angles and 3d dimensions!

Lol I haven't had to use any calculus. If you are good at translating your mesh ideas into 3d points and are very patient, you could probably make meshes with nifskope. I personally recommend blender for starters because even though its complex, its not nearly as mind numbing as manually making all the points and UVmaps. Nifskope is much better suited for retexturing and mesh-copying.
