it is possible to replace the default hairstyles?

I'm not sure if there's a mod for it already, but it's really easy to do.

1. Open up TES Construction Set

2. Go to Character > Hair...

3. Find the hairstyle you want to replace and copy down the .nif and .dds file paths and names

4. Find the Ren's hairstyle you want to replace with, and copy down the .nif and .dds file paths and names

5. Close TES Construction Set, and open up Windows Explorer

6. Go to your Oblivion\Data\Meshes and Oblivion\Data\Textures folders and find the files from step 4

7. Copy and rename them to the files from step 3 (make backups and overwrite the originals if necessary)

Hello fg109, I made exactly that (and other variants). But I only got that the style of original hair disappears.

The TES only shows one single .nif and other single .dds in Data\Meshes and Data\Textures, even with thei are in other folders, for example, Ren's textures are stored on "\Oblivion\Data\Textures\Characters\Ren\Hair", and the original ones, I dont know where are they. And for Ren textures there are 3 .nif for this style ("Ren_Hair17F.nif", "Ren_Hair17FND.nif" and "Ren_Hair17FOC.nif"). Maye in your explanation, you miss any step, or the Ren styles are not compatible, i guess...

What Im attempting to do is, excactly to place the Ren Hair style #17 on any of the default styles (I chose the ponytail style), for female character.

Tnahks anyway!

Post 2 won't work because most of the default hairstyles share one default texture, so replacing any default style that uses that texture (grey.dds from memory) will screw up all the other hairstyles that use it.

It is a cute resource saving trick, but leads to headaches for modders, just like one body for everything.

@oblivionpilgrim

Good point, I didn't consider that.

@VikingII

I don't know what "Ren_Hair17FND.nif" and "Ren_Hair17FOC.nif" are supposed to be, but they're not necessary for what you want to do. You can not find the original ones because they are in the "Oblivion - Meshes.bsa" file. This doesn't matter if you have archive invalidation.

So just copy and paste "Ren_Hair17F.nif" into your "Oblivion\Data\Meshes\Characters\Hair" folder. Then rename it to the default hairstyle you intend it to replace (e.g. Style06.nif). Do not copy the DDS file. You'll just have to live with the texture for the hair being slightly off.

I made that but it only causes that the style of original hair disappears. :(

I having read all other answers, so, is that impossible to replace a default hairstile?

thank all of you!

While what I'm going to describe won't replace a default hairstyle, unfortunately, it can be pretty useful.

1. Put the data files (meshes/textures/esp) of the hairstyle/hairpack you want to use in your data directory (I use throttlekitty's hairstlyes).

2. Use TES4Gecko to convert the esp file to an esm file. optionally also use a file date & time changer to ensure this esm is more recent

than any other esm/esp that also modifies hairstyles.

3. At this point you should be able to use the new hairstyles in the construction set and save them in your own custom esp. Finally I can do something about the terrible default Oblivion male hairstyles.

Now if only there were a way to easily search and replace the bald hairstyles (except of course for monks).......
