Of course, some dogs were bred for their survivability, like wolf hounds, St.Bernards, y'know, the big tough dogs, the ones that actually stand a chance living a month in the life of a wolf. So it's not all about dependency, it's about usefulness/appeal to man. Admittedly, dependency is a factor to usefulness in man in several domesticated species.

 

Also:

Because of man, features that did not have anything to do with survival (like ear length) became important. Weird, huh?
